Deleting local mac photos

Hi all,

I'm just not figuring this out so need some help.

I have no room left on my mac, it's affecting a number of things I do. I have all my photos in iCloud and have selected optimise storage. I thought that would keep some space free on my mac but it's not quite working like that. I've turned off iCloud photo on my mac.

I want to keep all my photos on iCloud but I want to delete the photos off my mac. How do I do this? Can I simply delete them? I can't find an explicit answer online.
