Deleting old backups from secure trash

I sent about 2 weeks of backups from an old MBP to my trash....It's something like 160k items...I keep deleting the trash by clicking secure empty trash...it then pops up and says cancel, remove unlocked items and remove all items. I select remove all items and it looks like it's deleting them but then all of the files are still there. How do I get rid of these files? Thanks.

Have you tried rebooting? It sounds like some of the files you deleted are still in use by the system.
