Deleting pics from iPhoto?

If you delete a picture from iPhoto, does the file itself get deleted too or just from the program? How would you make sure that pictures get deleted from the computer itself?

EDIT: everything ok. figured out all you had to do was empty iPhoto's trash
 
Yeah that confused me at first, too. It's the same principal as emptying the Trash in Finder.
