Delivery Dates based on Method of Order

Preordered through the Apple Store at about 6 AM EST and have the Dec 11-17 delivery window. Yet as of this morning the 28th I could order through Verizon with a delivery by December 1st.

What gives? Is Apple just being conservative with their estimate, or are we better off ordering through the carriers?
