Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there software you can download that will prevent the MBP from sleeping when the lid is closed? I remember someone here mentioning it, I think it was called InsomniaX.

You can't have it the primary and the notebook secondary.

You can mirror them, have the external the secondary, or have the external be the Only...

Attach it, put the notebook to sleep, close it, and then wake it up with an external mouse or keyboard and the external display will be the only display.

does this work for macbooks too? also when you close the lid and wake it again does the screen come on on the macbook even thou its close, or does the computer just know whats happening. Kinda a dumb quest. i know.
