I tried using a ThinkPad charger with the DELL end put on it as a TEMPERARY thing to give me a charger as I wait for the replacement but it didn't work. The Thinkpad charger put out 16.89V (instead of the 19.5V from the DELL charger, BUT the battery in the laptop is only 11.1V so you would of THOUGHT that a 16V charger would at least power it, but it didn't. CURSES!!!!!
Wow just wow.

Brb, imma go charge my MacBook with an asus charger with the MagSafe connector spliced on.

My track record with DELLs through the years make me stay clear of ever buying them. This laptop was $75 2 years ago it is a mid 2007 model, being the fact the DELL computers usually die within 1-2 years it's promising when it lives 5. HP/Compaq don't even live a year but that's a different story of itself.
You're buying a $75 laptop and complaining about how long it lasts?

The charger said DELL on it. The knockoffs don't they just say "AC ADAPTOR" or some such thing.

I can go buy a watch from a guy on a street corner that says Rolex on it. That doesn't mean it's a Rolex. Unless you know where it came from, there is no guarantee it wasn't counterfeit.

You're doing something wrong with your laptops then. We have both HPs and Dells at work and they're fine. We only keep laptops for 3 years before upgrading, but they all last 3 years and could go longer if corporate policy didn't dictate when we get upgraded computers.

it was an attempt at a TEMP solution, I was going to buy a replacement regardless if it worked or not anyway.

Just the attempt could have caused some serious damage.

Home-grade computers are of lesser build quality than business ones. That's why the Optiplex GX270 still works. That's why the eMac and PowerMac still work. Not just laptop, desktops too, My ex's DELL XPS M1530 didn't last 2 years and she paid $1500 for it (I saw the receipt) I fixed it 3 times before it was even a year old.
My Compaq Presario C300 series laptop had SO MUCH repairs (under warranty) done to it that i could of bought a Alienware computer with the repair costs.
My Compaq Presario SR1000 series desktop crashed after 15 days, and died after 1 year. Physically it still works but it rejects any OS install attempts.
No. Chinese knockoffs of anything now can come branded as OEM but the quality usually differs!
pretty much EVERYTHING is made in China! So that provides little of anything.

I know a lot of people with home-grade Dells and HPs, and you're the only one who seems to be having that many issues with them. Maybe it's something you're doing.

Umm, yes it does. There's a difference between an OEM and a knockoff built in China. The OEM one is still properly designed by engineers, built with quality parts, and under close supervision of Dell. The knockoff is designed by god knows who, built with cheap parts, and with no supervision. Read this if you still think using cheap, counterfeit chargers is OK: http://www.righto.com/2014/05/a-look-inside-ipad-chargers-pricey.html. And look, the counterfeit iPad charger even says "Apple" on it. Just like your possibly counterfeit charger still says Dell on it.

Nope I ain't the only one. Dells did at one time burst into flames, so a bad charger smoking isn't too unbelieveable. even OEM dell chargers say "Made In China" EVERYTHING is made in china. Most likely every applience in your house says "Made in China" most likely all of your TVs, DVD Players, Game system also say "Made In China"

Why are you fixing it if it's still under the 1 year warranty? I blame your incompetence, not Dell.

You bought a Compaq and are expecting quality?

Seems like an easy fix. New hard drive.

I think the common denominator is you. Not the computers

Not everything is made equal Matthew. Just because there are knockoff iPhones that are made in China and look like them doesn't mean they are the same as a real iPhone. Both made in China.

DVD players? What year is this? 2001?

Dells did not burst into flames. Cut out the crap. We're not stupid

Apple stuff isn't a comparison, as even their consumer systems are high end products.

I've never had a Macbook fail. Occasionally I lose an iMac G3 PSU, but other than that their dead reliable. The only other iMacs(again, consumer products) that have given me issues have been due to my own incompetence-such as when I pulled the video connector off a G4 logic board. I have a bunch of iBooks that work perfectly.

In fact, the only Apple products which seem to consistently give me trouble are MDD G4s, where the PSUs are a known problem source. I have another where the video stopped working one day out of the clear blue(not a video card issue, as I've tried four different ones).

The eMac isn't exactly a professional grade product. The specs(CPU and GPU) were generally either in line or a step below the concurrent iMac G4s. They're also a pain in the butt to repair(IMO, worse than an iMac). Their main market was education(hence the "e") ad were heavy so that they were difficult to steal.

I find the computer part of the eMac rather fun to tinker with. Since i have had to replace the original power switch with a normal computer power switch its EASY to get into. Takes more time to remove and re-attach the stand than it does to open the actual machine.

as far as the DELL charger goees it was OEM not a knockoff

Did you not read anything I wrote? Not all things made in China are equal. There's a big difference between a charger built in China from designs by a large company with a bunch of electrical engineers, and a charger built in China from spare parts in the rejects bin.

Unless you personally bought the charger from Dell or a reputable reseller, you don't know that. The logo on the label doesn't mean squat.

Well i found the Knockoff charger (the one that I got with the laptop) and i took it over to my grandpa and he soldered the broken wires on the end back together. It won't charge the battery anymore (??????) but will power it just fine. My new knockoff charger will be here within a couple days I assume.

The 90 watt adapters were also compatible with docking stations of the era. What a nice bonus over a 65 watt!
Sadly I found out that the 90W don't actually improve system preformance. the one that went up in smoke as a 90W funny how this knock-off not only looks OEM it also works better than OEM

How would a 90w versus a 65w improve system performance? More power = more power??????

Edit: It works better because when you plugged it in it didn't instantly vaporize in an explosion?

My dads office used to use all Dell computers, primarily laptops. They ran into an issue where they couldn't send back the Dell OEM chargers because they would vaporize entirely and they'd have nothing to send back to Dell to replace. They got stuck having to buy new chargers, $60 each.
