How to delete the software update showing in apple 3gs

You can't delete it. Even if you were to delete it, iOS would redownload it again.

but when my wi-fi is on it is downloading automatically

The only way that I've been able to stop it from downloading is to keep the phone full enough that there isn't any space for it to download.
