Any idea on depreciation per year on Macs... 30% year. 40%, .... ?

Thanks

Depends on demand, specs and who is doing the selling.

On MR, there is a significant hit. I would say 20% + (year one), because people like getting great deals. I don't think there is a set amount per year. Some models appear sell much quicker than others.

It depends. Lower spec models tend to hold their value better.

For instance you could have to pay a huge premium now to get a 1TB SSD but it may be a relatively inexpensive upgrade in a few years time. Seeing that Apple solders stuff in now you can't use 3rd party upgrades like you used to.

Resale prices on sites like eBay etc. tend to be a lot better than what you'd get for a trade-in with Apple.

Thanks guys... thinking since I spent $1600 on my Mac, if I loose 30% in one year, the computer costs me $480 for the year (or $40 / month, or $1.33 / day) of service... that is is great!

If I didn't know better, I would say you are already scheming numbers in regards to the new M2 (or whatever name is this year) upgrade. lol That was my first thought when seeing the thread.

anything past 2012 is great but before 2017 (pre-keyboard-gate) is better.
and 8 ram GBs
i might pick up a MPB 13" 2015 just for the photo-card drive instead of a new M1

You got it, spot on!!!!

Wishing for a MBP 13 without Touch Bar

I don't think that will happen. Apple did offer a MBP (for a short while) without the Touch Bar not long after the new feature was released. It seems Apple is intent on people using a Touch Bar. I probably would have gotten the MBP this year, if it didn't have a Touch Bar.

the ones with more ram tends to holds their value better, for alot of ppl ssd tend to be a non issue since you can always plug in a external.

Depends on demand, and depends on location.

I’ve managed to resell my refurbished 2013 MacBook Pro at about half its purchase value at year four of ownership, thus about 12.5%/year depreciation rate. But that involving me selling it in my 3rd world home country — and it won’t sell for much more than scrap/parts in the 1st world country where I bought it.

Corporates usually fully depreciate MacBooks at three years, as per its AppleCare warranty period, so that’s 33% depreciation rate.

MacOS Big Sur released in 2020 supported macs back until 2013–2015. So that’s an optimistic rate of 14% and a pessimistic one of 20%.
