Desktop display & function problems

iMac OS10.7.5

Very recently my Finder and Trash have frozen. All desktop icons disappeared and the menu bar is gone? While Mail and my Browser are fine.

I have taken all disk check procedures and reloaded the system, all with no change.

Any ideas???

Have your tried booting in Safe Mode? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564

Are you able to boot up a different user account? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199

When you say "reloaded the system" did you mean reinstalled OS X, or simply rebooted?

Tried both booting to Safe Mode and reinstalled the system without change. I've yet to try the booting to a different account.
