Desktop folder on all my drives?

Since 10.5 i've got a bit of a strange thing: I see a folder 'desktop' on all my disks.

Why is this, can I disable this?
 
I've had this as long as I've been using Macs (since early 10.4). But no idea why they appear I'm afraid.
