desktop icon customization

i've seen numerous desktops that have icons displayed on the desktop in this fashion:

can anyone tell me how to do this. i tried and it looks nothing like this. it looks like this:

any help would be great. thanks.

Right-click on the desktop. In the context menu, choose "viewing options" (or something to that effect). It should look something like the attached image. There's a box where you can choose which side of the icon the text is supposed to be.
