Desktop Icon Placement

Hey folks, long time Mac user, since 1989. Glad to be here.

So there are long time things that I have put up with as a Mac User, accepted to be the nature of the OS. And there are some features I hope there is some adjustment for, or some widget or app that makes this adjustment.

The first one I want to ask about icon placement. When I drag an item from a folder to the desktop, I want that icon to appear where I dropped the icon, not randomly on the desktop. This gets especially annoying when I drop something on the desktop and that new item is placed on the desktop BEHIND AN OPEN WINDOW.

Appreciate any advice to tweak this.

There’s an option to “organize by” somewhere. In the Finder’s view preferences maybe? Try that.

There are various ways to customize your desktop:

- Apple Menu; Finder; Preferences
- Finder Menu; View; View Options -- note that 'snap to grid' will cause icons to be forced into grid positions, turning this off will allow you to place icons wherever you want
- The Stacks option in the View menu of the Finder also gives you the ability to have desktop icons either collected together into groups (stacks), or not

Right click on a blank spot, select Group By. Set to None or Snap to Grid...
