When using the best for retina resolution on a 13", what is the best resolution of a desktop picture? 1280x800 or 2560x1600?

Also, what's the best when using scaled HiDPI resolutions of 1680x1050 and 1920x1200?

The best resolution is 2560x1600 regardless of whatever scaled mode you set. Setting a scaled mode only changes UI element size, but not the wallpaper itself.

The wallpaper itself should normally be the native resolution of the display (2560x1600 for 13" rMBP).
