Desktop & Screen Saver Freeze

When ever I enter the "Desktop & Screen Saver" preferences, the menu becomes unresponsive and freezes. CPU usage jumps to 50-60%. I've tried repairing permissions, is it a common issue and is there a fix for it?

I have the same problem with my new 17in MBP. It is really bumming me out. Tried repairing permissions, also didn't work for me

that happened when i switched to the new 17' mbp with my old harddrive
but installing the ilife update fixed it
