it is called ReaddleDocs... That App will sync all your MobileMe files. So just navigate to your files from it, then use the open in Pages feature, make your edits, and have Pages save the file to the MobileMe iDisk.

John, thanks for the suggestion, but I don't see how this is any better than copying files to and from iDisk within Pages. Pages already gives you access to your iDisk files within the app. But you still have to tap "Copy to iDisk" and re-upload every time you make changes & select "replace existing document". It's a tedious manual process vs. your changes being synced with iDisk every time you open the app.

Online Offline

So what if you are offline but want to work on your documents? Internet connectivity is not a sure thing. Our internet connection is down for a couple of weeks per year, when I need to use it. Fortunately I can use local apps on my computer. I wouldn't want to be totally dependent on the connection.

I just tried it.

Opened my iPad in Google docs in the desktop mode. Created a document and "exported" to my iPad. Once I did, I was able to open it up in "USB Disk". It saved it there. I can then email it, email it, or delete it.

It's great for the iPad!

this is the problem for us non 3Grs. Pages does what I need it to and can work offline. The syncing is an issue, but there are workarounds.

Man, and I thought I was so cool when I got docsToGo for my Blackberry... This does give more credibility to the iPad being a netbook killer...

Ahaha, really? Because it's mobile browser can now handle more than just basic webpages? The iPad still struggles with lots of other things you come across on the web, like embedded PDFs for one. My iPad is great for reading, but that's about it. I don't like doing any real browsing on it, just as I would try to avoid excessive browsing on my iPhone. Looking to switch back to a laptop and get a Kindle for the reading bit.

Google still doesn't seem to have rolled out the mobile update to edit on iOS to where I am! This all sounds great, but I wish they'd hurry up and let me try it!!

aggh . . . . I saw this announcement so I thought cool, my wife and I were doing christmas shopping so I thought I'd use Google Docs on my iPad to create our shopping list. What a nightmare. I couldn't select things properly, clicking on menu items was a a chore, when I finally gave up I was even having issues copying the list and pasting it in another app.

This always happens to me when I try to abandon Apple's services for Google's. Google is free and is in the cloud, it sounds so awesome, until I try it. And i have tried it! (google calendar vs. iCal, Picasa vs. iPhoto, Google Docs vs. iWork & iWork.com, me.com mail vs. gmail, Google's book reader vs. iBooks, Chrome vs. Safari, google sites vs. iWeb, etc.)

Google's stuff is so cool in concept but is executed poorly imo. Out of all the above, I would say only Chrome and Gmail are better than the Apple alternative and in the case of Gmail I still prefer the slickness and simplicity of my mobile me mail. As for browser I think Chrome is awesome but I still mainly use Safari because with mobileme, all of my bookmarks get syncs among all of my devices so effortlessly.

that still doesn't explain why Safari Mobile can't support the features of Google Docs. Just because the iPad uses your finger instead of a mouse and keyboard, that doesn't mean it should be able to

youre coming to the wrong conclusions. effective UI design for a particular platform is the responsibility of the application developer, not the platform developer. the platform (ipad) is out there...its up to app developers (google) to ensure they design for it properly. at this time google docs hasnt been optimized for touch-displays, thus the lack of support.

effective pointer-based and touch-based designs are completely different beasts. many times you cannot simply port one to the other.
