Desktops "Widgets"

I see people with things on their desktops like weather and calendars that just sorta float on there with a little transparency...wonderin if anyone knows what they are. On the attached image its down in the lower left corner.

You could use Yahoo! Widgets.

There's a widget called Dashit that will allow you to drag dashboard widgets to the desktop

Pretty nice desktop there, there is also stattoo, although not free
