I know I am a newbie, but what is it with people posting threads, and then ignoring the answers?

I've been using Macs since '93 and the thing that I've noticed more and more in recent years is that we're getting long time Windows converts and they're set in their ways. So even though they ask for help and get it, they still have the Windows mindset, like here in this thread they believe that they can install any version of OS X they happen to have available because that's the way it works in the Windows world. If we're lucky they'll "bang their heads against the immovable object" a few times and then come back here and heed the advice given. Or they may decide we're all nuts and go back to Windows, you never know. Whatever the case, some of us keep trying to help even though it sometimes falls on deaf ears. I guess we're "the Crazy Ones". :)

Thanks for being so blunt. It's the first Mac I've owned and was told by the Apple support over the phone to install 10.5 then upgrade it via the net,

I'll search for a newer version of OSX and install that.

I have just found a friend with a version of Lion 10.7 bootable recovery disc, we will now try installing with this.

"why are people given advice and ignore it"

I missed quite a few posts due to me posting at the same time and not seeing them. I've now re read all posts and realized that 10.5 is too old, although I was told by apple support it would work and outlaid a fair bit of cash to get it.

I also read that NTFS is read only so that's why I was trying to reformat in HFS+. The problem with the earlier OS was making me think that the wrong format was causing my trouble.

It's been 2 hours and 14 minutes. Have you gotten Lion on?

No, he's gone to work and then we're both going on holidays I'll look at it again after Xmas.

The friends bootable copy of 10.7 is it the official Apple USB flash drive or one they made themselves? If it's one they made themselves it's either tied to the hardware it came on or if it was purchased from the Mac App Store it's tied to their Apple ID. If it came on hardware I don't think it can be installed on another Mac and if it's from the Mac App Store it could be a source of problems as it's tied to their Apple ID.
