Detecting a call is made

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and also to iOS programming so please be gentle..

I'm trying to develop a statistical app for iphone, that will run in the background and keep an independent log of calls made from and received to the iphone.

I found out that in older versions of iOS there was no way for an app that's not in the front to tell when a call is being started/ended. Has that changed in iOS 8?

(It should work without jailbreak of course)

Any help or info will be much appreciated!
