Developer Demonstrates Wireless Syncing of iPhone and iPod Touch to iTunes

Engadget points to a YouTube video posted by a developer apparently showing an iPhone application called Wi-Fi Sync that will enable users to wirelessly sync their iPhones and iPod touches with their computers via a local Wi-Fi network.
As the name implies, the app promises a complete sync of your iPhone or iPod touch with iTunes without having to tether and looks pretty straightforward (and occasionally useful) based on the video demonstration found after the break.
According to comments from the developer, he believes that the application fully complies with Apple's developer rules and will be submitting it for inclusion in the App Store later this week.

The application requires a separate syncing application to be installed on the user's computer. The video shows a Mac OS X version of the application in action, and the developer promises that a Windows version is under development.

Would be great if they do allow this - as I keep saying appletv has had wireless sync since birth. This app could be a winner, much as Air video is.

Those quibbles are drifting away...

I don't know why Apple hasn't done this natively yet. Seems like a no-brainer and something a lot of users will find super-useful. I know I would, but not sure I want to install a third party app to have to run in order to get this done.

I agree. Definitely should be native. Although it isn't yet, I'm sure Apple has been working on it. Just a few more years I'm sure . . .

Should have been done in-house by Apple years ago. I look forward to this app getting into the App Store.

Nothing is getting more aggravating then having to sync with itunes (via USB), then open each individual app that needs to sync via wireless..

Why couldn't apple have some built-in API to allow itunes to auto sync all apps.

hope

1. I hope Apple will allow it
2. I hope the iTunes plugin does not crash iTunes like for example AudioScrabbler does...

There is no way this will ever be on the App Store. Not only does it appear to somehow trick iTunes on the host side into syncing with something, it also must somehow write to the /var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control directory on the device, which is against the App Store terms...

These people are fooling themselves if they think it will ever be approved. Can't wait until it's available on Cydia though.

My bet: it won't be rejected.. but will fall in the "non-rejected-app-limbo" where Google Voice still lives. Then, for 4.0 .. Steve Jobs will present "Wireless Super Sync" which allows syncing over Bluetooth.. but only for newer iPhones such as the "4G" and the 3GS.. because you know.. the 3G doesn't have enough power (cough cough)

Every time Apple previews new iPhone software everyone starts talking about the big obvious features. I feel like the only one saying "Wait, go back to the screen about the new APIs!"

THIS is what's exciting about new iPhone software...every year they open up more and more features which allow stuff like this to happen. Everyone tends to ignore the API news at first, but in the end it's the stuff that makes the most difference to the platform.

I also don't know why everyone's being so pessimistic. I can't think of any reason why this won't be accepted. (Unless he cheated somehow, but he claims he didn't.) If the developer is telling the truth I see no reason why this won't be approved.

Kudos, very impressive! I do wonder if Apple will approve this one though. Totally agree, why Apple did not do this out of the box is beyond me. My wifes old crappy Treo did sync via bluetooth.

Speaking of which, I wonder if the author went down the road of trying to get the sync to work via bluetooth? There is certainly more bandwidth available with wi-fi than bluetooth, but it seems like it would be enough to get the job done and a bit more convenient as you could sync to your laptop while out and about.
