Here is what Apple said about in app purchase changes:

  • To give developers even more flexibility to reach their customers, Apple is also clarifying that developers can use communications, such as email, to share information about payment methods outside of their iOS app. As always, developers will not pay Apple a commission on any purchases taking place outside of their app or the App Store. Users must consent to the communication and have the right to opt out.
That last line is key. How many will consent? Will apps put up nag screens that say "Please let us email you?"

More importantly, what will Apple do to make up for lost revenue? In theory, a company such as EPIC would become a small developer if most sales were made outside of the App Store. Given Apple has tons of data about sales volumes, etc. garnered over teh years I could see them going to a fee per download model if sales revenue drops too much; which would severely impact free apps depending on if and how they do that.

The upside is it would get rid of a lot of the trash and clone apps since all of a sudden that model would not be profitable anymore.

In android apps, you usually have a small checkbox (unchecked initially) when you sign up that asks whether the app can mail you offers. Doesn't hinder the experience the actually and just one time.

Not surprisingly, ( and as far as I can tell ) the payout doesn't include macOS developers, only iOS. Please post if my understanding is inaccurate. Of course, it is possible to install non-appStore apps on a Mac, so that might partly explain the difference. By the way, as a Mac developer, I believe Apple provides a service which I agree to pay. If their commission was too high, I could vote with my feet and sell elsewhere. iOS developers have fewer options but they still have a choice to offer their product on iOS or not.

This "group of developers" sends chills through my bones. Apple is fully entitled to a fair share of revenue to cover the costs of EVERYTHING they have built and continue to improve for these developers year after year.

They’re just giving back what they shouldn’t have taken in the first place. $100 million is a drop in the bucket of the untold billions the App Store has made.

Have you ever run a business? Would you set up a business and then just give away its assets for free? Apple is fully entitled to compensation for the store operations.

No matter what the legal system decides. I only buy software from the App Store and only pay Apple. This approach has kept me bug free since I fully migrated to the Apple environment. Laptop, tablet, phone, home automation, speakers and in auto communication.

Having a business is evil and greedy don't you know? Of course we good people would give it all away, just like when teens see their first paycheck deductions and beg, please take more!

Between $250 and $30,000... I wonder if this will be like how a lot of class action payouts are in the form of a voucher/credit that you have to use with the defendant instead of an actual check you can cash/deposit.

$30,000 in Apple Store credit... that'd be pretty terrible.
$30k I could easily pay that much for a MacBook Pro m1x pro max fully decked out. Lol

Edit:
With all that said, seems I qualify for $500 ?

For US iOS Developers only, I guess Apple won this amount of payout is nothing compared to how much they make from paid app, I’m a UK developer and what ever I make Apple takes at least 30% off the overall profits.

This demonstrates Apple’s main motivation:

Settlement Section 12.1:
“Apple may, at its sole discretion, terminate this Settlement Agreement if the number of Developers who seek exclusion from the Settlement Class exceeds 10% of the total number of Developers in the Settlement Class.”

Best option is to request exclusion.

The money sounds like a lot, but to Apple it’s not. The amount is irrelevant. Apple doesn’t want to ever face an anti-trust case in the future. 10% just shows the risk reduction they want to buy with this settlement. Remember, you can NEVER be part of a related legal action against Apple if you remain in the class.

Hmmm Apple Store or App Store? Apple Store would be worse than cash, but imagine $30,000 that has to be used on the App Store lolol

You should be able to qualify for 15% if you make less than $1,000,000 per year.
