Out of the blue a few days ago, dictation doesn't work at all. Siri requests work fine but when trying to use dictation in any app, a mic icon with an X appears and it hears nothing. I've only tried rebooting as I'm not quite ready to do more extreme troubleshooting like erase and restore etc.

iPhone 14 Pro iOS 16.0.2

Thoughts?

Yea, it doesn’t generate any text and when I tap the icon to end the dictation it just does a blue ring spin. 16.0.2

Sorry you’re having the same problem.

Hopefully since we’re not alone, that means a bug fix will come soon. I really don’t want to have to restore if I don’t have to.

A temporary workaround is to use the keyboard English (UK) instead of (US)
Thanks for the tip! Working now... weird side effect is that it reverts to the old style of dictation that covers the keyboard instead of the new style where the keyboard is shown and can be used simultaneously. It's definitely better than nothing though!

Nevermind, it has the new behavior now... still shows the mic icon with the X but it works. Hoping for a proper fix soon. :)

Just to clear some things up... The mic icon with the X is normal. You tap that to end the dictation. (It doesn't mean it's muted or not working.)

It also seems that different apps behave differently in terms of how the keyboard/dictation works. Some/most apps will do it the new way, where the keyboard still shows (and no wave form); and other apps still hide the keyboard and show the wave form. Not sure what causes the difference here. Maybe the APIs the developer uses or targets? Weirdly though, Safari is one of them that still does it the old way and shows the wave form.

I initially thought mine wasn't working too when it didn't show the wave form, but I just repeated what I said and it started dictating.

Same issue here. It seems to carry over to CarPlay too, which is where I actually fist noticed it, unless that’s a separate bug.

So the change keyboard to UK trick stopped working. Now Siri doesn’t work at all either. Just says “just a moment. Still working.” Then says “sorry, there’s a problem”

Hoping iOS 16.1 fixes this… bring it on already!!

The new dictation feature on iOS 16 stopped working on my phone today. It worked since the iOS 16 betas. Used it today but then stopped working.

I got now the old dictation only behaviour again without the ability to interact with the keyboard during dictation also the button looks different.
Restart of the phone did not help.

Does Siri work for you? For me Siri and dictation both stopped worrying about the same time.

My Siri stopped working also and I saw a tip to switch the Siri voice and it started working again for me. Apparently Apple is aware and working on a fix. I hope it's included in 16.1 and will find out on Monday!

Siri is working for me but only with a data connection. When the phone is offline there is a notification that the phone needs a data connection to download additional data for the offline usage.
The strange thing is that it worked for me the whole time since the iOS 16 betas until the RC of 16.1.
Yesterday i switched the language once because I wanted to dictate something in English (worked as well) and then it stopped working in this new iOS 16 style and no more offline voice features.

I have the same issue on carplay but not only for dictation. I am also not able to ask her to play a song for example. It just spins and after a short while i get the "DING DING" without actually having done anything

Means the bug will will out with 16.1 and if not the final version would be different from the RC.

It’s working again. Seemed to be an server side issue. Curious if this has anything to do with the new Siri option on tv os 16.1

Thank you! I just switched to a different Siri voice and that got both Siri and Dictation working for me. Hopefully that keeps working.
