Dictation from audio

I regularly use the dictation option and it works great. Really saves hours on my week compared to typing. What I am not able to do is to is record text from recordings, such as spoken notes or videos. I can't get anything to work when trying to record audio from the same machine as I'm dictating with, and playing the sound on another device held to the microphone won't trigger anything either. Is this even possible? It just seems weird that when I speak it will work, yet no other form of sound output gets recorded. Thanks.
