Did anyone think that the pervious iMac was too fat?

It´s always the same, the prices for the non BTO options are made for people that want a decent machine. THey will never put a beast inside the standard models - that´s just plain stupid to think.

If you can afford it, you can have the thinnest desktop with a beast inside. If you can´t then consider if design or hardware is what appeals to you most and then decide if iMac is the way to go. It´s as simple as that.

Actually the top end GPU was available in a standard model 27" last time around. This time you'll need to BTO and pay up for the top end GPU. You won't be getting the top GPU this time for 1999.

Re: Did anyone think that the pervious iMac was too fat?

I was at an Oktoberfest event this past weekend and there was a song the band performed about being with a girl with thicker thighs.... this thread reminds me of that song. :D

Let's just say despite the perceived thinness of the new iMac, I'm too madly in love with my 2011 model. ;)

Not everyone will have fast Internet

All good stuff but you should be a few years from upgrading if you have a 2011 iMac. Assuming you don't upgrade until 2014, will you need a DVD drive by then? You will presumably have 50 Mbps download and 10 mbps upload on Internet by then as will your tech savvy buddies. Also nearly unlimited hard drive storage. So will you be burning disks or just emailing the files? I don't think the drive will be sorely missed by many. But I also think that folks will buy external drives that they keep in a drawer for occasional use.

Well not everyone lives in lower 48 or a big city with fast Internet . Iam in Alaska in the big city of Alaska and the fast Internet here is like 10 Mbps and that is through cable so we share the speed. Don't see fast coming here anytime soon. So yes I see DVD use for a long time

Have you heard of 'micro-unit' apartments?

Apartments in major cities are small, and only getting smaller, new micro units in NYC are usually <350 sqft. The previous design requires the standard 24"+ (60cm+) wide desk. I, for one, would eventually like a desktop that I can mount to the wall as we do for most TVs now, so we can use a 17" (45cm) wide or smaller desk. The new design probably still needs a wider desk (and the ports will need to be moved to the side before it's wall-mountable), but at least it's going in the right direction.

Not everyone is going to agree with design changes (for me, the new nano, wtf?), but it was probably done in mind with benefiting some.

I know what you mean and i have always preferred a girl with some meat on her bones. :D

no it was not. you could increase the GPU of the highest end standard models.

Sorry. You are probably right. You could move near some other humans. :)

But don't give up home. I'm just getting my cable through Time Warner wires and I don't think they've done much in the way of physical upgrades. I can just order 50 MBs from them if I want it.

FIOS is coming in some places and bringing 200 MBS through their fiber optics. And frankly don't forget that LTE brings over the air 30 MBs speed. By 2014 you could have that or even better available to you.

Why would a consumer need to service the RAM. Genius Bar for that and it doesn't cost anything under warranty.

Apple charge an insane price for their RAM. Hence most sane people source and upgrade their own, or used to.

The stand is the same size as before (and still not ergonomic); as is the computer in the middle. So no desk space saved.

Gee people, it's simple.

Apple made it thinner because it needed a way to sell more of these at the same high prices it was getting for the older models. If you just stuck better, faster components inside no one but nerds would notice and they wouldn't sell many. They are now a mobile company, and this is a declining chunk of their business. The basic all-in-one design is older than cellphones with extendable antennas, and they haven't thought of a new desktop design.

I'll bet it's the last gasp. Why not cut to the chase and make it a table-top touch screen i-megaPad? Or a iTV? Now it's about as useful as a designer dress, and equally expensive.

I don't know why people are complaining about moving a 27" iMac around. If you have ever moved a 21" CRT monitor you will truly see that the 27" is a featherweight compared to the monitors of yesteryear.

Apple is a company that loves attention. Vanity plays a significant part in their decisions. Apples obsession with "thin" is legendary. It's not a matter of wanting it. Apple just delivers it.

Users, by and large, have enough RAM today. The typical iMac user is going to be fine with 8GB of RAM. If they want more in their 21.5 them buy the 16GB model.

It's easy to come up with obstacles. That's why most most people are decidedly average. Too busy building walls and obstacles.

Mediocrity is also being happy with whatever is presented to you and not striving for better. Standing around and negating other people thoughts under guise of being "enlighten" doesn't advance anything.

The only time I hated the size and weight of my previous iMac was when I had to carry it to an Apple store. Unfortunately, the one I choose to go to did not have the greatest parking availability so I had to lug it to the store from at least a block or so away.

I really don't see the big deal about the thinness one way or the other. We should not have been surprised that the optical drive was on it's way out, and since it was not going to be there, why leave it thick? Also, the bonded glass screen was also on it's way in from evidence of both rMBPs and will probably make it's way to the other Macbooks in the near future.

If you take away the issue of the optical drive, and the screen, the iMac is pretty much the same as it's been (minus the accessible RAM on the 21.5"). Since Apple was already moving in this direction for both of those changes, then it shouldn't have been a surprise.

Totally love the 2012 iMac.

1998

What's the point of transparency? Who needs to see the insides? Where's my floppy drive? and so on...

2012

What's the point of thinness? Who needs a thin desktop? Where's my superdrive? And so on...

Déjà vu all over again for an innovative Apple product.

To be honest the "Super" drive isn't very super compared to the completion and is 3x the price! For just over £20 you can get an external DVD±RW DL & RAM drive. For about £10 more you could even get one with lightscribe!

Yes ...not striving for better. You an I are closer than you think. I'm not not afraid to call out the negative nabobs.

No one asked for the iMac to get thinner but the reality is, when you carry one it immediately becomes clear that 8-9 lbs lighter wouldn't be such a bad idea.

Perfection is unattainable. Get over yourselves and get something done with what you have.

What's strange, is months ago there WERE a BUNCH of posters saying they'd like the iMac thinner (not sarcastically) and was one of the reasons they gave why they thought they should remove the ODD

Only a few posters have liked the idea of a thinner iMac (when the rumors started to spread).

I can assure you that the vast majority refused the idea and really hoped for an iMac with better performance, not a thinner design.

5.400 RPM HDD in a desktop machine that costs 1.300 dollars. :p
LOL. What kind of retarded people pay that price for such a ****** computer?

Déjà vu all over again for an innovative Apple product.

Making something thinner isn't innovation, kid, it's just "making something thinner".
The first iPad was an innovation, but this ****** thin iMac isn't an innovation.

Anyone who's had to carry these sumb****ches

If you like the 5400 RPM drive you have SSD or Fusion Drive options
Why would a consumer need to service the RAM. Genius Bar for that and it doesn't cost anything under warranty.

Optical drive - Mac App Store or $79 superdrive.

GPU with "only" 512MB of RAM hahahahah

It's easy to come up with a laundry list of complaints. That's what mediocre humans do.

Your argument is full of holes. the old one shipped standards with a 7200 rpm hdd. ther newer one shudnt be slower, and you shunt have to pay more for a fusion or sad becus apple didnt gigve you a decent hdd. user servivceable ram is to upgrade it in the future. no one wants to bjy an 80 dollar drive that shud come standard. 512mb pushing a 1080p screen is way too little, especially for a computer that starts at 1300 dollars. yes you are a mediocre human

LOL ...what's that make you then? An Amoeba?

New iMac has 8GB of RAM and a 1TB HDD as standard items. All things being considered more consumers care about storage space rather than speed. Plus we're talking about areal density improvements on the 5400 rpm drive that'll help for overall throughput.

Try to find an easier mark next time. You don't know more than I do.

I didn't think the last iMac was too thick though the optical drive definitely needed to go. I also believe that the GPU is too low. If I was going to buy an iMac it would have to be the 27" ultimate but I don't do anything graphically intensive.
