I’ve got an issue with my cellular provider. I’ve found a huge discrepancy in billing for a device that can’t exist. Please help if you can!

What is the billing discrepancy?

Long story. I see an installment plan that claims I currently have an iPhone 6 with 256GB “sold” to me in 2018 for For over $1,200 with a substantial balance. I’ve been paying for it since then with a couple other installment plans.

I have an an old 64GB with the listed phone number and IMEI that corresponds with the 256GB suspicious billing. It makes no sense since I’ve had this phone, for one of my kids, for much longer than 2018. I did get a new phone number for it when I moved it from my kid to my spouse. The kid got a new phone, but kept her own number.

I’ve checked out all the history of my other AT&T devices, old and newer phones, Apple Watch, and iPads and they check out. I even checked out my installment purchase of 2 newer iPhones on a two for one contract. They check out.

The only things left are two iPad Pros. One paid off, and one bought for cash from Apple. I did order a 2018 iPad Pro from AT&T and cancelled it, and purchased one from Apple for cash. I was wondering if I was being billed for the cancelled order?

Again, the IMEI on the phantom billing of the 256 GB iPhone 6 matches the old 64GB that I moved from my kid to a new number for my spouse. The new number for my spouse matches the one on the iPhone 6 for billing that I think is faulty.

All in all I am perplexed. So far I’ve found there was no such thing as a 256GB iPhone 6. Nor would I have purchased one in 2018. I’ll be following up with AT&T when higher ups are available on weekdays.

Are either of your iPad Pros 256 GB models?

Yes, but their IMEI’s are different than the iPhone 6 that is getting billed. One ATT iPad is paid off, the other is a cash Apple store purchase. So, you can see my concern.

You sure it’s not one of the new phones you got for your wife.
It’s possible at the time a cross upgrade was done. In my experience the labeling is off on the device type so I wouldn’t take it for granted that it’s an iPhone 6. Double check all imei for devices that are 256GB

The iPhone 6 was passed down to my wife. The two for one Xs’s went to me and my daughter. my former 8+ has just not been used, but I paid that off a few days ago for $116.00.

I think I’ve accounted for all the IMEI numbers. But, I think you are right, something weird happened when I did the two for one. Or, when I ordered and cancelled an iPad Pro.

In any event does AT&T roll an exiting installment plan to a phone that was paid off? If so I’m not sure what device could have been rolled to the old iPhone 6.

My plan now is to pursue this with AT&T and pay off any existing device installment plans ASAP. I do not want to live in this quagmire any longer.

they don’t roll so that is a little weird. It either has to do with that two for one. Or it’s possible the iPad cancel didn’t process the cancelation of installments and those are active. I’ve seen some funky things.

Well after sometime on the phone I got an answer that I’m still not sure about. They claim my two for one really wasn’t one new free phone and one to pay. Evidently it was simply a monthly payment reduction on one of the phones. It looks like you might get two for one if you buy a less expensive phone. Buyer beware I guess.

But flipping a $1200 cost to my kids old iPhone seems weird. I will never do this again. I’ll gibe Apple all my device business in the future. And in the meantime I’m going to pay off any installment plans at AT&T I have as soon as I can. I’ll knock another one down next week.

Sheesh, I feel like I visited a shady used car lot doing business with the local AT&T shop. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. It is on me to get the details before signing on the dotted line.

When the carriers do BOGO they will always indicate the monthly balance owed for both phones, then a credit for one of them. If the BOGO is capped at a specific model or value then you might wind up with just a partial "free" phone after all the 24 or 30 months has elapsed.

I don't understand the part about flipping a $1200 balance owed to a device nor do I understand how they can get an IEMI linked to a device description that does not exist.

As the OP I have no idea. I may try the local store, but they don’t want to talk billing usually. I may try again on the phone when my Apple Watch shows my BP is down.

In the meantime I am going to pay off non-suspect installment plans. No more AT&T installments for me!

Just did one with Apple. Easy! Spouse will get Xs. Me, the new 11Pro. Traded iPhone 8+ $300 discount.

on my account i have my in laws my wife and myself. On my in laws, i got them iphone 8s when it got released. For some reason the iPhone 8’s says iPhone 6! as long as the IMEI matches your fine. It’s a typo in their part
