Rumors are just that: rumors. There was nothing to "trash" in the first place.

I guess you're right. I just thought there was a lot of rumors leading up to the design pre-4S.

I don't remember seeing very many leaks about the 4S maintaining the exact same design as the 4.

Exactly, we all know Apple likes experimenting with many elements in their products. I remember seeing the original iPad with two dock connectors. That was such a shocker to me since that model almost got released.

This is true. In fact, up until the announcement we had heard rumors of two dock connectors, but its existence wasn't proven until the Apple vs. Samsung trial. Just because there wasn't hard evidence didn't mean that it didn't exist, and that is likely true of this teardrop iPhone design as well.

The only thing got me was the picture appeared in iPhoto, I thought that would be conclusive evidence that it would be released sometime in the future.

How does that make any sense since the iPhoto picture doesn't show a profile of the device?

I never understood why people thought that was proof of anything.

Because the tapered iPhone was rumored to have the earpiece pushed up and the home button widened, like this.

Some argued that it was meant to represent a generic device, like the camera below it. This is unlikely, however, as Apple always represents its own products unless it has no equivalent. (For example, on the Apple TV page, a generic LCD is shown since there is no Apple branded television). After the icon leaked, Apple replaced it with an iPad and iPhone icon.
