Well, I did something very left field for me today. I have an app for my provider on my phone, they don't sell their own handsets and are an MVNO, but they have had an offer of £50 off handsets from someone called reboxed.com, they are a British company selling refurb or second hand units. I checked on Trust Pilot and they get very good reviews.

Now I've been toying with a new Pro phone for a long time. But I unconsciously baulk at the pricing of new iPhones especially in the U.K.

So.....

I looked today and saw they had a 13 Pro 128GB Sierra Blue in 'premium', their highest level, condition for £699, take the £50 off makes it £649. I had to use my credit card but that's just too good a price to pass!

I have been very split on a Max or standard model, I have an XR and find the screen a little restrictive sometimes, but I also believe after a while a Max phone may annoy me with its baulk and weight.
I'll see how I go.

For context the cheapest iPhone 14 is £849 for the standard model.

Did I make a good purchase? I'll go over it with a fine tooth comb once it arrives. And put a screen protector on it, any recommendations?
I really wanted 5G and a better camera, my eyes do like the Max bigger screen but have always been unsure of the bigger baulk it entails.

This is the first time in my life I have bought a second hand phone. A little nervous at that but the price saving is huge.
It comes with a 12 month warranty and 30 day money back guarantee so it has some safety with it. Plus I can always send it back for full refund in the first 7 days under distance selling laws.

Update, I’ve bought a Spigen screen protector and case. I usually find their products to be pretty good.

If that is 50 off the retail price, I would have spent the extra 50 to get a brand new 13 pro, if the price of the 14 or 14 pro is too much for you. How resellers term "premium" or other subjective terms can vary greatly. It is a roll of the dice as to the real condition of the phone you receive.

Hi, you did great! Screen difference is totally negligible between 13 pro and pro max, unless you like to use font enlarge in display settings.

You saved a couple hundred, which is great until it isn’t ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It’s just a matter of cost vs. risk, and that isn’t a decision I can make for you, I can only talk about how it’d go for me.

With ReBoxed there’s a 12-month warranty, which is good. However, that warranty only applies to ReBoxed repairing it (which means shipping it in, being without a phone for multiple days) And if you take it anywhere else for any sort of repair - the warranty is void per their T&C. So you need to keep a “Spare” phone for emergency use. I always sell/trade my old phone so that’d factor into the £200 savings. I put AppleCare+ on my phones, so if there’s an issue I can have it serviced at any Apple location or a new one sent via Express Replacement. Obviously that costs additional but for me it’s worth the peace of mind.

I certainly wouldn’t say you’ve made a “Bad” choice. It’s not the choice I’d have made - but that’s entirely based on >my< cost vs. risk assessment.

You cannot buy the 13 Pro new? It was replaced by the 14 Pro last September which in the UK starts from £1100. The 13 Pro started from £999 when it was new, so I made a £350 saving total. And I checked Trust Pilot, a review site where real customers leave reviews, and it gets a very positive rating, and as I stated I am protected under the distance selling regulations so can send it back for a full refund no questions if I want to.

For the huge cost savings I’m more than happy with the risk. I have never paid for Apple Care either, I may very well keep my XR as a backup phone or give it to someone who could use it, and I can borrow it from if needed.
If I look at the cost of a new iPhone 14 Pro and Apple care, it would total an extra £649, so exactly double what I paid. To me that saving makes up for it.

But thanks for the reply always good to see different opinions.

Of course that’s an Apples vs… well, other Apple comparison I guess 🤣

A better cost comparison, would be against the plain iPhone 13. You saved about £100, you gain the better camera on the Pro, and you lose the Apple warranty. You don’t get AppleCare either way so that cost isn’t relevant. So “a couple hundred” savings, more or less. As I said, not a deal I’d be willing to risk £649 on, but that doesn’t make it a “Bad” deal. If it’s a deal you’re happy with, Vaya con Dios!

Got the phone today, just unboxed it and went over it with a fine tooth comb, not a mark on it anywhere! It's mint, I would say new even. I did a very quick rushed through setup to check the battery and its capacity is still at 100%!! So I am a very happy bunny, LOVE the colour.

Only slight thing I have noticed is it has some heft to it! Didn't know they were that weighty, still I'm glad I went with the none Max one if that's the case as that's heavier. Feels quality that's for sure. My first ever 'Pro' iPhone lol.
Don't want to play around with it too much as I have a case and screen protector coming for it, after I've put those on I'll set it up properly. The screen is very nice.

Also just noticed according to the information in the settings app, the phone is still under warranty with Apple till December 9th this year!
I personally believe I have grabbed an absolute bargain! Significantly cheaper then an iPhone 14 let alone Pro. And cheaper then a standard iPhone 13.

I’ll have to go through logging into everything on it later lol. Cameras seem good on it which is one of the reasons I wanted a Pro iPhone.
I plan to keep this one for a long time, I’ve got my screen protector and case on it, if I can get a bargain refurb like this I’ll do it again next time. Maybe it’ll be a folding iPhone by then?

I'm seriously impressed. It could have easily surpassed 9 hours. I had the news playing on it whilst working:
