Ok, can someone who has never installed smcfancontrol tell us what their idle fan speed is on a unibody ? also those of you that are on 2.2.2 did you have 2.1 installed previously ? If so what is your fan speed ? similarly for those on 2.1 or 2.2.2 without upgrading.

I am getting very suspicious of either new installs of 2.2.2 or upgrades from 2.1, one of them is wrong.

ive never understood peoples insistance on playing around with fan settings?

Do they know something which the engineers at Apple do not?

By default, arent they already set at optimal speeds?

If im missing something please set me straight.

Oh, mine never go below 1999rpm when idle. 2.4ghz unibody with 4GB ram.

I just wanted a simple monitor for the temp and fan speed, not to fiddle with the fans, now I am worried the monitoring program may be causing problems itself.

P.s. what is that 2000 RPM measured with ?

You're welcome.

I'm removing this creation from my macbook when I get home, I suspect fresh installs of 2.2.2 are setting the default fan speed incorrectly, I'd rather not know than risk potential damage, thank goodness I only installed it on Saturday (was using 2.1 previously which set it at 2000).

There is an inconsistency in the machines.plist file between

a) the 2.2.2 dmg on eidac.de that allows Macbook5,1 fans to dip to 1800rpm, there are two entries for the minimum speed one says 1800rpm the other says 2000rpm

b) the dmg from macupdate.com which has 2000rpm in both entries !

I'm going to add to this post that I believe SMCfancontrol and myself burned out my fan this week!

I acquired a used Macbook Air and was paranoid it would run hot after reading so much on the topic. I did the Apple "update" and installed SMCfancontrol and set it to run at 5000rpm all the time when on cord power.

Before anyone states "duh" my experience with variable drive systems is they heat up more from constant adjustment to voltage, so I figured what the heck. A week latter I"m at 000rpm! $30 fan ordered and on the way...
