I get your post now.

But I still don't agree. I feel if we can use older photos, it's no longer an assignment, but more of a "do you have any pics of [insert subject here]." Of course, I wouldn't bother me if we were to "accept" such photos.

Actually, I agree with you. I got a PM asking which is why I raised it.

I suspect we may end up with thread alongside which has people's best all-time shots of the current assignment... which might also be fun.

Could be fun. We could have an "unofficial assignment" running along side the "official" one. Would allow us to see how time constraints affect the quality of our work.

1) Extend assignments beyond 10 days. Otherwise participation levels will be very very low.

2) Any photo entered must be taken after the assignment topic is decided.

3) One thread for both posting images and comments is fine.

Thoughts?

I'm fine with all of those.

So far as 1 goes, I think that assignments will work best if we do them monthly. If (in the future) we spend the first 10 days of a month choosing the assignment and the next 18-21 days to taking the pictures, it should work quite well. Makes it easier to remember to take the shot and post it if it's an end of month deadline. But to get it onto that schedule, we'll need to 'cram' in this one - or delay it a long time which is why the process seemed to die last time.

Let's see how it goes - and if there are no pictures there on 1 March, then we'll extend the period slightly this time too. It's never going to suit everyone but I think 2-3 weeks in future should work out pretty well.

That sounds ideal to me. Lets see how this one goes, and get it done by the end of Feb and then next time we can fine tune stuff. But 2-3 weeks sounds great to me. I know if I couldn't do one in time, I would just not enter that month.

Also, when we're voting on the titles, it will probably fairly obvious what's a popular topic. Once the voting starts to favour one or two topics, there's no harm in having a think about what you might shoot before the final votes are in.

You want to spend 10 days choosing the assignment topic?

Honestly, I think we're better off with a much faster decision-making process, like 3-4 days. The way we want to do it, there will be 12 assignments a year. That's a lot. We'll eventually go through all the topics listed in the voting thread anyway, so lets just pick one and do it. We're on a very slow moving train, it seems.

Why not just spend 3-4 days deciding the topic (someone can just put up a voting thread with 5 choices or so and give us 3-4 days to decide, then give us 3 weekends or so to shoot and submit a photo. The remaining days of the month can be empty. These contests occur every month. However, they don't NEED to last for exactly 1 month.

Yes, or we could just start this assignment on March 1st. It would be such a waste of a good topic if nobody participates. And this way we don't have to extend this contest into the middle of March if nobody participates (like you suggested). We can start fresh in March.......right at the beginning of the month.

I like the idea of having the specific assignment thread which requires that the images be shot within the time period of the assignment, but also having an additional thread if people so desire so that they can show off some of their work that would've been good for the assignment but which had been shot outside of the time frame.

Looking at this again, I think a week would be sufficient time in order to choose/vote on a topic, and that would allow a little more time for the actual execution of the project.

One thing I did wonder - are we set on the rule about when the picture has to be taken? Or could we relax the rules to within 3 months? There might be a picture you have that is perfect for the theme but you won't have a chance to recreate in the time limit?

Fine with me if the pic´s been taken within 3 months.

I expressed myself badly - 'twas late. That's exactly what I intended - that by the 10th of the month (at the latest), we'd know what we were shooting. That would mean 3-4 days of thinking up topics and a few days to choose - with a couple of days in reserve just in case.

I'm happy to say 7th - 3 days to think of topics and 4 days to vote. Was just trying to give time at both ends of the spectrum.
