Not to offend anyone here but the new Apple MB/MBP does remind me of the current Alienware Area-51 m15x:

Baring the fact that laptop is hideous, It get's even worse when you start to rotate it. As has been said countless times on the thread, It's the quality as always that separates Apple products, the small details that add together to make something that no one else can compete with and why Mr Ive has won award after award....

The bezel is huge, not very elegant at all. It's not like Apple hasn't made a thin bezel before, look at the PowerBook G4 and the TiBook.

You honestly think that aluminum is LESS durable than plastic? Particularly a rust proof/resistant metal? If that were the case, we would have a lot more plastic cars. The last I knew, the only mass produced cars that were plastic were Saturns and the Corvette.

Not to mention the thermal properties that aluminum provides over plastic as well as recycling.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Aluminum holds different properties than most plastics, such as being malleable. Arguing in favor of aluminum over plastic for a computer because it's rustproof is completely moot because plastic obviously doesn't rust.

Also about the cars--wrong there as well. Nearly every car on the road is made largely out of composite plastics, with the exception of the rear quarter panels and sometimes the decklid, which retain sheet metal construction. Otherwise the cars (even high end cars) are made from composites. Saturns are the only composite vehicles that are made from such poor composites that they shatter upon impact.

Also, Corvettes are made from fiberglass, not plastic in the slightest.

In any case, I don't think that Mac's should be made of plastic, I like the aluminium look; however, I don't fool myself into believing it's a more practical or durable solution.

Damo

Agreed. I love my MBP to death, but damn does it feel fragile, I'm afraid anything and everything will scratch it.

There are a CRAPLOAD of Aluminum planes in the air though. And many for quite some time I might add. The point is, in most cases and applications, aluminum is a stronger more durable material than plastic.
The reason you don't see more aluminum cars is simply cost. steel is too cheap at the moment, in relative terms.

You are aware of why airplanes have aluminum parts, right? One of many reasons is because it needs to be able to flex, e.g. NOT be so durable.
