RIP 27" iMac. Personally, I'm a lot happier with a modular system. I'm picking up the studio display today, and will us it with my M1 for a few years until I feel the need to upgrade the brains.
Guess this firmly cements the idea that iMac is consumer oriented and hence they don't see the need for a larger version.
Not so sure about that. Where is the rumored re-designed high-end Mini with the plexiglass top? That may be yet to come in the summer or fall. Regardless, my space grey 64gb i7 2018 Mini is smiling.
The big issue here is the 27 inch iMacs were mostly affordable. They were a sweet spot for those who want an all in one that was not the base model. Now we are stuck with either the 24 inch M1 or pay more than twice that for what essentially is a Mac Mini plus a separate screen.
Lets use the US prices (on the site, ie pre tax) as a comparison.
Top 24 inch iMac - 1700
Lowest Max Studio - 2000, plus screen 1600
So that is 1700 for the 24 inch option and 3600 for the (lowest) 27 inch option. Also losing the all in one aspect of it (which some might prefer though).
Also add in the fact there is no Pro option. It's base on the 24 inch or Max/Ultra on the Mini plus 27 inch screen option.
This will make things very tough in terms of choosing. A lot of people want slightly more than an the base M1 but that does not exist. Either you get he base or really high end with a high end price.
Apple has killed the low to mid end 27 inch potions (what would be the Pro in the M1 world). Rather sad as a lot of people would have bought an M1 Pro iMac.

I don't think this is the end of the larger iMac. Ross Young has been very accurate with display rumours and has discussed a 27" miniLED panel with ProMotion. Kuo revised his timeline for the new "iMac Pro" to 2023. It seems like for whatever reason, Apple couldn't deliver the larger iMac they wanted to this year so have pushed it to 2023 (presumably with M2 Pro/Max).
In the meantime, it doesn't make sense to keep selling the old 27" iMac now that the 24" iMac and Mac Studio exist. The entry level configurations get beat by the M1 for less money, and the higher configs get smashed by the Studio, also for less money.

They can always introduce a larger iMac at a later date & I am sure they will. It's clearly not part of the initial 2 year plan, that's all.
I think Intel Mac mini will be replaced by M1 Pro/Max Mac mini. Simple to update. But Mac Studio starts from M1 Max with 32gb so not sure about it. Why not add M1 Pro on Mac Studio to replace Intel Mac mini?

The base model is reasonably priced, but if you start adding extras, the price quickly gets high. It's definitely not as cost-effective as the iMac 27" was. And the 128 GB RAM limit is pretty underwhelming for that price.
It looks like Apple is no longer selling anything better than the MBP 16" for the price I'm willing to pay.

Apple said white will transition their entire lineup over to Apple Silicon within 2 years. iMac Pro is part of that lineup.
I do not think Apple lied with that statement. So Accuming Apple did not lie, then, either we will get an iMac Pro within the next so many months or this beefed up Mini plus screen is the new iMac Pro.

Did anyone just catch John Ternus saying... "making our transition nearly complete with only one product left to go, the Mac Pro" That sound like the 27" iMac will not get updated to Apple Silicon. I hope it's not true. 😟

Apple know the low end only buy low end spa the 24 inch exists.
Apple want to much the the prosumer into a higher tier of computer . . . basically pay more for their computer. So they remove the computer sky they had (low to mid tier 27 inch) and make high end and high price the only option. Sounds a lot like corporate greed if you ask me.
Think the second is right.. the Studio's not AIO but it fits right under the new display.. I guess they could average the 27 iMac and iMac Pro specs and cost to fill that new gap..?
Also possible they're having design issues with the 27". Or they're unsure about 27 v 30 v 32, specs, FaceID, price point etc.
Well I have a 27" iMac (2017) and I was ready to plunk down for an M1/M2 version today. But that is a huge price bump for an upgrade. The Studio Monitor is just too expensive IMHO. Don't want to downgrade to 24" so I guess I'll be holding onto this iMac for several years. Did want to run iPhone/iPad apps though...
I don't think so. This will separate Apple's consumer line from its semi-professional line. And that's exactly what's happening.
Yup. The Studio Display is a computerless 27" iMac.
Frankly IMHO they should've done that a long time ago. Given the choice I find many people tend to change out computers far sooner than they need change out the display.
There is certainly logic to this, and I've used it myself at times. But the beauty of the 27" iMac is what kept drawing me back to it. I could get on board if the CPU+Monitor didn't cost so freaking much.
