I am used to just pressing the power button for a second to make my MacBook Pro sleep.

Did they remove the feature/shortcut in Sierra??
 
Update from El Capitan. Just to be sure - does the button physically work? As in, does holding it longer open the shutdown menu?

Hmm a reset did the trick :)
