I'm not sure the poll will tell much.
Forums here are full of people recommending RAM upgrades. I imagine it's a different split to the overall sales judging by the ones rolling out of my local store.

I BTO'd my 2012 Air to 8Gb just because it's not an option for later. I'll BTO the rMBP to 16gb as well. I can't say I'll need it but it's one upgrade I'd prefer to pay for upfront. The Air still runs to me like it's new out of the box (unless I start messing with iMovie) so hopefully it was a good few pounds to spend.

has to be at least 8Gb these days...my first tower I thought was very advanced having 256mb

You are right....I tried to use my 4GB model but it wouldn't boot. I just got a message saying "has to be at least 8GB these days"

you may laugh but OSX and apps use a hell of a lot of ram these days-I dont know what year yours is or which OS...4GB sure is fine if you dont intend to use any higher end software like video, music etc...but for the small added cost - why would you not get 8Gb to have the extra headroom?

I wasnt suggesting older models/systems were defunkt - just if you were buying new...hence my comment...

My PowerBook G4 came with 1.25 GB, and is currently using 57 MB (posting from this one now). My 2011 MBP came with 4 GB and is currently using 270 MB.

Both have way more than I'll ever need.

Oh man I regret ever giving up my 12" PowerBook G4. It was the best Mac I ever owned.

It manages ram differently. It uses what is available but doesn't mean it requires more. It actually makes what you have stretch farther.

I picked up a 2013 base model rMBP 4/128. Perfect for my needs. I completely agree that someone would need more than 4GB of ram for higher end video editing etc.

In situations where the difference is only 100 or so like if you are ordering new from Apple, I agree with you. However, in situations where people are buying them refurbished, or through retailers like Best Buy, the difference between the base model and the next model is often 200 plus. In these cases, I think someone should really consider whether they need it, or if they are just wasting money.

I know and sorry if I came across as an ass:D

I got mine with 4GB (2x2GB) and have upgraded to 10GB (1x2GB and 1x8GB) for now. Planning to get another 8GB when I need it.
