This has the ear marks of a company going through growing pains. I'm wondering if I should use my 3500 USD and buy Apple stock instead 😕

0 supply...lots of demand. Not a profitable business model.

If it was a shortage, then some people would have gotten the 17s. If they had, say, 10,000 screens and an unexpected 20,000 orders, they'd still be able to ship 10,000 orders.

I think they had the 15" model ready to go for the launch (meaning the final design ready for production and possibly parts already stocked). But the 17" wasn't ready for launch yet. Either they were still in final design/testing. Or they were not ready with the parts pipeline.

It seems what they should have done is launched the 15" on Oct 24 (or probably Oct 31 really) and then announced that a 17" was coming mid to late November. What would they have lost by just being honest?

The 17" is a unique machine. Where else can you get a 17" screen in a one inch thick case. So they know they have a captive audience. (Which explains why the 15" gets priority in design/pre-production). So why not be honest, Apple?

BTW, if someone shows me a 17" laptop that's only one inch thick and weighs 7 lbs and runs linux well, I'd probably cancel my order.
 
In my opinion, these 17s better be spot on (no issues) or Apple will have some serious customer relationship issues to resolve.

People are just bummed.. cause the carrot is being waived in "our" face... but we can't get a bite... not even with the almighty $$$..

I've submitted the 17" C2D MBP delay to the MacRumors for full story

I've never done this, submit something to the news and rumor board of this site, but I feel this delay is big news and can't remain in the bowels of this one forum. Only by seeing the light of day may Mac actually begin to address us with some respect.

I submitted the following:

"Waiting until the last moment to inform customers who ordered the 17" C2D Mac Book Pro, Apple has delayed shipping until November 14th or earlier. With no reports of a single 17" C2D MBP, speculations are being discussed on the forum "did you get your 17" C2D MBP yet?" on this site if there is a problem with product parts. Also noted is the lack of detail from Apple of the nature of the hold up, as well as the fact that people who ordered on October 24th were not notified until at the end of the day when they were to begin shipping, leading to a mood of poor consumer relations from the computer giant, which has been seeking to woo customers away from PCs."

If anyone on the 17" MBP thread knows the magic of making this materialize as a front page story at MacRumors, please let me know, or do what you can. But only through bringing attention to this situation can we begin (I hope) to get something other than lowly agents mouthing the company line.
 
I can't imagine this being a supply issue just b/c we haven't seen not a one. No way they (Apple or the contracted factory) are going to let a whole assembly line just sit there.


Either they want to ship a WHOLE lot at one time, there is a problem at the factory that they are made in, they are changing the supplier or there is a major problem with the laptop itself.

Good for you!!!

Extremely disappointed, Apple did a reserve on my credit card last Wed. I was told last Thursday that mine was in production, I was told today that it would be shipped tonight and I would receive my shipping notice this evening.

After all the hype about Apple's customer service and their products and spending over $3,800 cnd. this is really regrettable.
 
I got the delay notice this evening too.

Given Apple's horrific quality, I may cancel my order and wait to see the reviews.

I am sitting here with a 2 day old 30" inch display, with tons of problems. 2000 grand, a premium product over the Dell and HP, and it sucks.

Apple really needs to get its act together.

Apple has been doing this for YEARS... Scratch that DECADES. They should have it perfected fairly well. Some one or some group screwed up and we are not getting our product. The only reason why I am not canceling the order is for 2 reasons.

1. Apple makes good product and I plan to use it for years.

2. I Hate Windows, and Linux only causes grief in the long run with Stupid Elitist programmers who will resist any attempt to make a tool useful.

If delay was really because of high demand there would still have been some 17" MBP's shipped.
 
Wouldn't it be sweet if Apple says that the delay is due to a Microsoft computer putting more viruses from an infected computer at some contracted manufacturing facility. Then they publicly chastise MS for their lack security.

Where have I heard this before? Just kidding 🙄

When did Apple become the "man"?
 
i did what a few others have done and got 50 dollars reimbursed, as the purchase entailed the statement of "7-10 days" until shipment, and it is the night of the 10th. i must say i'd rather the machine.. but anything to make me feel less bitter helps.

so.. 50 dollars + free expedited shipping.
if it goes beyond the 14th, more will be demanded, because this is ridiculous.

Why Apple can't make serious inrodes in enterprise.

This is one of the reasons why Apple can't make serious inroads into enterprise market. First you keep you upgrade cycle a Secret until the last minute then you at the last minute make an unexpected delay for almost an other week of shipping. I am glad I haven't consulted or managed people to get 17" MBP, if I did my Butt will be on the fire right now. Probably calling Apple to cancel their order and Calling Lenovo or Dell so I can get some systems in, so the hired contractors who's job is to install software and deploy the new systems, are not sitting around doing nothing for a week. Or before that Trying to build a team with an unknown upgrade date. If Apple wants to get out of the Personal just for a person. Market they need to
A. Ship on TIME.
B. Tell us when and generally what the next upgrade will be. They can keep the cool case design and actual price and some of the fluffy features secret so Jobs can get his Jolly presenting it, to get the OMG!! But let us know in September that C2D for 17" MacBook Pros will be ready for Order by October 24 and will start shipping on the 14th.

I see no one has posted here for over an hour. I smell black helicopters. Is the "I've been hosed by Mac over the shipping of my 17" C2D MBP" gone the way of the Apple store, down for scheduled upgrade?

This is only a test.
 
i just think we all feel let down to say the least.

i hate to sound all dramatic, but most of us who ordered it so soon did so after waiting ages for this famous merom to surface.. and now we have to wait longer as it is "dangled" (referencing a fellow waiting customer here) before us.

it's just dissappointing.
and it's not as if apple couldn't have foreseen this.

oh well.
back to waiting - that's the name of the game.
 
Yea we've all been busy avoiding the black suburbans that keep driving by our houses. I too received my email of delay tonight. If it weren't for the fact that I had already ordered the Adobe CS2 and Microsoft Office software for the mac . . . this order would be cancelled. This is ridiculous. I have been a Dell customer since the mid nineties, going through about 8 computers and never once did I run into this kind of problem. I would say that 5 of those were ordered right when they were released. The only thing bad I've gotten from Dell is their foreign customer service. (Though ordering through corporate, small business, or ordering the XPS gives you excellent non-foreign service) Everything else was top notch. Great discounts when you buy and if there ever was a problem, they fixed it, and they took care of you.

I totally agree with the post stating that Apple needs to get its act together if it wants to get out of just the personal side of computers. Solid release dates on products with new specs, adequate supply, staying true to the ship dates, and the ability to take care of your customers rather then just offering a measly $20 or $50 "I'm sorry" consolation prize.

I think it's just disappointing since we know this was not a surprise to Apple. And so they were obviously less than forthcoming about the true release date for the 17" model. Apple has definitely ripped the fun out of this purchase by not being upfront with us.

This is either my 10th or 12th Mac, I can't remember. I'll continue to buy them of course until someone makes something better. (In fact I stopped buying from around System 8 until OS X because I did find something better in linux for a while.) But I'm not kidding: if someone else made a 17" screen in a 1" thick case with 3GB or better of RAM and around 7 lbs and had drivers for something like Ubuntu and could give me a honest delivery timeframe, I would cancel this order right now.

Unfortunately for me and fortunately for Apple, no one offers anything close to that.
 
I'm wondering if Mac has ever had this happen before, a major release having to be delayed. Not trying to make an excuse for them, but if they never have, maybe they are completely naive and clueless as to what proper customer relations is. Basically, they have no plan for this scenerio. We are the unwitting victims of their learning curve, and Mac is not even in kindergarten or Headstart, or even Sesame Street, but Teli-Tubbies and Barney the Purple dinosaur.
 
Any thoughts that the online store is down due to Apple getting ready to release the Macbook with C2D? just wondering because prior to the MBP being upgraded to C2D the sight was down for awhile the day before as well, I think.

The store isn't down, it's just the orderstatus section. You can order a Macbook right now with the CD.

I've been thinking that about the site, too. Apple is gearing up for the holiday sales season and probably is going to be releasing some new products to sell. I wish we could claim the clout of our anger having overwhelmed the site, but as they say, "follow the money".
 
A very disappointing day. I agree that they should have not waited until zero hour to tell everyone that Santa was not going to come (or at least depart). I wish I was a fly on the wall to see what the reports were from China actually were and what the Apple execs responses were.

On the consolation note: how are people getting there 50$ and shipping upgrades are you phoning or emailing?

Cheers all, remember 98.2% of us will be very happy in a months time.
