The 2009 and later minis can actually drive the 30" at full rez using a miniDisplayPort to dual-link DVI adapter. The original Intel mini can't - the GMA 950 really isn't good enough for anything.

BRB returning to work on my time machine so I can send a GMA 950 back to 1976 to go and power the Apple I and change the course of history… oh no, the authorities are at my front door, they found out about my experiment!… oh never mind, they just came to tell me that the GMA 950 can’t even handle the Apple I, and I should continue on with whatever I was doing…

I must admit, there were certain circumstances in which I was able to get the GMA to outperform the Radeon 9550 in my iBook, some early OS X games actually ran faster. Very odd being that they had to go through Rosetta too. Pro Skater 3 is the one that comes to mind. Runs like trash on max settings with the iBook, runs smooth on my 17" iMac and Mini with the GMA. I do wonder how much the jump in CPU accounts for this though. That is only one example but I was surprised nevertheless. It does suck for almost everything though, it can't even drive 1920x1200 well. Under Tiger you could get away with it, but by SL moving windows causes massive lag.

Back on the topic of PBs, does anyone recall the mods people used to do to get 1680x1050 screens on earlier 17" PowerBooks? I feel like there was some cross-compatibility between the panels that made it fairly easy to source them and install.

I may be completely wrong here, but my understanding of the 17-inch LCDs in PowerBooks all used 30-pin LVDS cables (versus the 20-pin found in the 12-inch PowerBooks). Step 27 on the iFixit LCD disassembly for pre-late ’05 models would support this. If so, then it should be no more complex (factoring in the work of removing that front bezel) than a one-to-one swap.
