I've had a string of diesels over the years. The one I have now will probably be my last. As Quagmire points out in recent years they've become complete maintenance queens. (In years gone by they were bullet proof if um, a bit tractor like to drive. There rarely seemed to be anything to go wrong or replace. However, my more recent ones while increasingly nice to drive have been 'delicate' to say the least - having to replace injectors at 40-60,000 miles can be a very unpleasant surprise, leave alone always having the potential cost of replacing the DPF hanging over you. After some expensive error codes I know now to try to mitigate all this by using the more expensive (better) fuel, use the odd pot of additive and try to avoid too much stop start town driving. You also need to make sure they get some motorway (freeway) runs as often as possible to regenerate the DPF but to be honest compared to how maintenance free they used to be its all becoming a right PITA... If you do a lot of miles then they're still a good choice but for everyone else I'm not so sure anymore.
