Difference between iCloud Mail "alias" and "hide my email"?

Can someone please explain the difference?

As i understand both provide the same service. Only difference i can see is that you can have 3 aliases while hide my email addresses are unlimited?

A few differences off the top of my head are currently we can't use Hide My Email addresses to send from as you can with Mail aliases. Aliases are available in the Reachable At settings; Hide My Email addresses are not. Hide My Email addresses can be deactivated; aliases can be deleted but not deactivated. Aliases can be used with Facetime, Messages and Game Center; Hide My Email addresses cannot.

Edited: Aliases can be turned off for Allow Sending From.

Can anyone verify the limit to how many email addresses you can hide? Is it 100? I have probably over 160 logins.

And judging from iOS settings, it looks like they can be deleted (not deactivated).

You have deactivate the address before it can be deleted. The delete function only becomes available in the Inactive Addresses section.

Email aliases are something we’ve already had before iOS 15 when we chose to “sign in with Apple”. It’s the randomly generated email address that was created that would forward to our actual iCloud email.
Now, we can manually create one of these addresses without having to click “sign in with Apple.” For example, on a website or app that doesn’t offer the option to Sign In with Apple.
I suppose this new way would help to isolate where that new spam is coming from.

Is that about right?

iCloud email aliases have been around for a long time. You can create up to 3 by signing into icloud.com and go to Mail settings. At one time we could have 5.

Sign in with Apple is newer and seems like the predecessor to Hide My Email.
