How much data, in GB or MB, do you have to save in order to reformat the HDD?

Can you burn it to DVDs or copy it to a cheap HDD or USB stick? Do you have another computer in the house where you could temporarily move the files to via a network connection?

    Imported or important?

Use Finder or OmniDiskSweeper, GrandPerspective or Disk Inventory X to find out how much data you have to backup.
