With the d70 & kit lens, since it's AF-S, you can use auto and manual focus simultaneously.

Mike, thanks so much for the detailed advice. I've heard other people say the same thing about Canon lenses... The feature you describe above sounds really useful. I've used cameras that do this a couple of times and it seemed really nice, although for the kind of issues I had in mind, I'm most interested in controlling the final focus, and not the initial focus, so I think the toggle switch will work just about as well. But still it sounds like a nice piece of engineering.

The lens issue does sound like a really important consideration. For me personally, I'm still intent on trying to learn a little more about my point-n-shoot, since I already own it :D and I can use the time to slowly shop for the right used deal. If I could find a Nikon at a reasonable used price, I would be *very* interested in going that route.... But also I've only shot the rebel, so I will have to go test a D70 sometime soon.

You should definitely grab a d70 and test it out. Feels pretty good for a sub $1000 DSLR. Funny thing about lenses is that the lower end Nikon stuff doesn't seem to work as well, IMHO.

All the 28-200's, 70-300's, 28-80's and such just seem a little soft. Put on a $1300 17-55 and you're golden. That said, the one nikon that sticks out is the 24-85 g which evolved into the 18-70 kit lens. Great sharpness comparing to the high end 28-70 and 17-55. A little slower, but man, the crispness.

Here's a sample with the 18-70 set somewhere around 55? I'm not 100% sure. ;)

Nice! :) The fringe of light on her arm and neckline turned out gorgeously. The crispiness of all the little details like the little hairs that are catching the light works really nicely. Also not bad considering that direct light must've come pretty close to saturating your camera!

AP_piano, first of all, holy old thread, batman! :) Second, did you read any of this thread before making your recommendation?

There is still one question I kinda had that was relevant to this thread...I'm pretty sold on DSLR, but there are a bunch of people here who seem to be into the EVF cameras, like the one DBPOSTER is selling. I still don't quite understand these cameras...it's true that I've only taken a few pictures with them. But for isntance, they have manual focus. But you must focus through an EVF that has terrible resolution. Do they offer some kind of blown up center focusing spot, like some film SLRs do? Or is this feature basically useless (man focus with EVF)?

For a budget, the Canon A95 is a great value right now. And at $799 the DRebel is a super value in a DSLR.
I bought the A95 in January for around $300 from Dell. I spent quite a bit of time researching cameras as I am new to digital photography. So far it has been a great camera, I really like it. I was tempted by the Powershot G6, but I figured that was too much money for my first digital camera. Dell has the A95 for $$279 right now - great deal!
