I wonder if my current order will ship before this is released.

If it's going to introduce PWM or make the laptop any heavier than it is, then it's not welcome.

Deeper black, more accurate color, weight/space efficiencies, reduced power consumption.

I do. Deeper blacks and bright whites make it more suitable for HDR editing And viewing. Local dimming is important.

That's all 100% true. But on a 13' MacBook Air? Who is watching/editing directly on a 13' screen? And in a perfectly dark room where this really matters anyways?

It seems like people (including myself) watch content on iPads or TVs, and edit content on large external monitors.

Obviously I realize this doesn't apply to everyone, just my thoughts. Hopefully the reduced power consumption is noticeable.

I worry about patchy back lighting with local dimming, mini LEDs are not micro LEDs so depending how densely they pack them in there one LED is still going to be covering a large number of pixels (especially on a retina display), so when you've got white text against black, or any light against dark situation that bridges dimming zones then local dimming has to compromise with what it does and one or the other loses out.

The attached picture is a very extreme example, but illustrates the point...

It's mostly fine when watching moving images, but when you're talking about text, interfaces, solid colours, vector illustrations etc there is always a compromise about how aggressive the dimming algorithm is and weather it tries to preserve blacks at the expense of brightness, or punch brightness at the expense of blacks, and how responsive it is in reacting.

I shall wait for reviews before spending thousands on this, I have a horrid suspicion there might be "first generation Apple product" teething problems.

This is my dilemma. I've just received a new, current MBP 16" and am debating whether to use it or to sell it and buy a new gen when they come out. I do need access to Windows, so I wouldn't buy an Apple Silicon machine until it's fully supported, and who knows when that will happen (I do think it will happen eventually). There will certainly be kinks in any new architecture/ form factor, and gen 2 will be a long wait. That said, I think the smart move is to sell and wait (depending on what I could get for it) but it's awfully tempting to open that box....

I was in the same boat. Decided to open up and use it, as I needed windows also and some apps I use still dont work on M chips.
If you have the 5600m model, definitely use it as it is great. Its as good as or better than any windows laptop out there, even if you end up just using it for that.

With the mini Led Display it’s the right time this year to make a upgrade from iPad 11 pro 2018. Hopefully it also arrives in the first half of the year like the 12.9 Modell that the sources say.

It’s going to get to be an expensive year if Apple smashes all these rumours!

This makes sense. Most innovations that start on the Pro eventually trickle to the Air. At least the ones that aren't controversial (i.e. The Touch Bar)

Suddenly those vintage design M1s don't look so enticing anymore...
They never did really, and I said before launch, no redesign = no buy from me.

We only got one as my partner needed one for work.

14" slim bezel with a decent GPU is a day 1 purchase for me however.

You said laptops, and plenty of people use their laptops for both viewing and editing regardless of size...including myself.

Is the Mini LED Macbook Air the same one coming out with colors near the end of this year or early next? Or is it redesign now, Mini LED later in 2022?
