Apple plans to release new AirPods with the same design as the existing AirPods Pro but without active noise cancellation, allowing for a lower price point, according to supply chain sources cited by Taiwanese publication DigiTimes.

The paywalled report claims that Apple originally planned to unveil the new AirPods in May 2020, and while Apple has apparently not yet made any adjustments to that release schedule, the supply chain sources believe that Apple may have to postpone the launch to the second half of 2020 or even 2021 due to the global health crisis.

An excerpt from the report:
Apple may have to defer the launch of its new AirPods Pro to the second half of 2020 or even 2021, according to sources at related suppliers.

Apple originally planned to unveil the new AirPods Pro in May 2020, but the schedule may be pushed back, as Apple has been unable to send staff to the production lines in Asia to inspect the status of the TWS earbuds due to the coronavirus outbreak, the sources noted.

But Apple so far has not yet made any adjustments to the earbuds' release schedule, the sources said.
The report refers to the earphones as new AirPods Pro, but it is quite possible these could end up being regular third-generation AirPods.

The current lineup includes second-generation AirPods with a wired charging case for $159, second-generation AirPods with a wireless charging case for $199, and AirPods Pro with a wireless charging case for $249.

Over the weekend, leaker Jon Prosser said new AirPods are "ready to go" and will "probably" launch next month.

I hope that the new "normal" non-Pro AirPods WON'T have the in-ear tips like the AirPods Pro do.
You and I are the exact opposite. I hope they do offer them with in-ear tips. The regular plastic body AirPods don't fit my ears. Offering regular AirPods with the plastic body and regular AirPods with in-ear tips is a win win for all concerned. Everyone can get what suits them best.

Airpod Pros were the biggest waste of money I've done. They fall out of my ears constantly and I tossed them in my cupboard. Apple Hong Kong doesn't do refunds so I a **** out of luck on $250.
Loved the previous two Airpods I had so I figured yay - Airpods with noise cancellation would be great. But I won't ever buy one of this design again.

I’m in the hope the AirPods either retain the corded EarPods shape or if they offer Prostyle tipped ones, they offer both. Making everyone wear those uncomfortable tipped things would suck. Don’t force that on all of us. You want Pro and ANC get that. You want better sound get over the ear w or w/o ANC. Want to work out, go Pro or PowerBeats. Or even plain AirPods work for that. But please Apple leave the AirPods shape alone. You’ll lose buyers if the tipped Pro becomes the only form factor.

Lol. Apple you’re confusing me. I gave up on the confusing iPad line with all the different sizes over the years.

Well that is one way to fix their current Pro issues. Don't release an updated firmware to fix the microphone feedback issue with ANC/Transparency.. lets just release a new pair, remove those features and price it cheaper.. who would know? Seriously, love Apple products but their Airpod Pro's are by far the worst product they've released in a long time.

Indeed. I'm very interested in the shape of the internal fitting they press on to. Will it still be slightly out of round? Is the Silicon a new formulation? Will they have Transparency Mode? Really looking forward to the initial teardown to see Apple's "stealth redesign features."

I agree with everyone not caring for the rubber tipped AirPods. I was in an Apple Store and they just happened to have the Pros in stock, so I got a pair. 2 days later they were returned. They were some of the most uncomfortable earbuds I’ve ever worn.

There will not be new firmware for the ANC version until the internal mic and it's mesh cover are redesigned.

This is exactly what I was waiting for. I love the in ear design but the Pro are quite pricey and I'd rather buy something at standard AirPods price point

I’m glad that Apple is using the AirPod pro design since they actually stay in the ear during workouts, unlike the AirPod 2 design

Shouldn't be that way, firmware update is needed to actually revert back to the previous one. That particular firmware did not cause feedback noise which is what is really the cause of all the issues the pros are having. Has nothing to do with the microphone itself or the mesh covers. They changed the frequency is all.. which again is why people dislike ANC after the update. I've already confirmed this months ago but they aren't moving on an update sadly.
