Im not looking to digitise my entire DVD collection, but would like to digitise a few of the most commonly used ones, mainly animated movies that the kids watch over and over!

I have Handbrake which I use for video conversion etc, however when I try to convert a DVD to MP4 it doesn't complete the job because the disc has copywrite protection.

How do you back up your DVDs?

I've never had a problem using Handbrake with VLC to do this

However, if I am backing up or copying a DVD I use Mac DVD Ripper Pro or RipIt
Once you rip the DVD you should be able to Handbrake it as well

Ah, so I need to use Mac DVD Ripper, or something similar, to first rip the DVD, and then Handbrake to encode, if needed?

You can, but you shouldn't have to
You should be able to do it in one step with Handbrake using VLC with it
I do it all the time

If I want a full backup/copy, I will use MDRP first and Handbrake
If I just want a copy for the iPad or Apple TV I just use Handbrake and the DVD
You have to have VLC installed as well (with the new tweak)
