Everyone here must have lots of extra cash. If 250 GB isn't enough, why spend $400 just to upgrade the SSD. It's crazy. Just wait for the next spec bump. The new MBP Retina isn't a "must have" laptop like everyone was expecting, so the wait shouldn't be too hard, and hopefully they'll iron out a lot of the wrinkles with the notebook. This is their first experiment, so they haven't nailed it yet. The technology isn't good enough (we need cheaper components) and the Retina is basically a novelty at this point... I'd wait for the next spec bump

I would gladly wait for next spec bump if I wasn't going to need another MBP for work. Unfortunately the stock 500GB SSD is not big enough for my 600GB of photos, not to mention the 150GB iTunes library and 150GB Aperture library plus 50-60GB or so for apps.

If only there's 1TB option at cheap levels!

I was sad at first as well, but the truth is that I can't fit my Aperture library on the Mac either way, especially now that it supports AVCHD import. My library is over 1 GB, so no way to hold it on any laptop.

On the other hand, once I have the Aperture library on an external drive, 256 GB is plenty.
I love how Aperture gives you the ability to selectively export photos/videos to external drives, but still reference them in Aperture, even if that drive is disconnected!

I installed a 128GB SSD in my 13" MBP. I though it would be tough to manage files, but I really wanted the speed gains and was so sick of the HDD noise and waiting for it to spin up, and sucking all my battery, etc. I found that it really forced me to keep only essential files and not use my computer like an archive vault as I was used to doing. Now I just offload non-essential/outdated files to and ext. drive periodically. My incoming 15" has the 256GB so that will be easy to deal with.

Small disclaimer though -- this is a work only computer. I don't keep music, photos, or movies on it -- at least ones I didn't make. My home computer has a 2GB drive + separate drives for photos, music, and FCP projects.

Here are couple of solutions I'll be using:

128GB sd card for £140 and 128GB USB 3.0 stick for £90.

So extra 256GB for £230, both are fast enough for file storage.

This is kinda what I'm thinking. SDs are getting huge and cheaper by the day, and I hadn't thought of USB 3 sticks but that would work too. I have a 500GB drive right now but honestly most of the space that is taken up is junk that I didn't bother cleaning out because I have the space. Any large media files go to a 3TB usb drive plugged into my Time Capsule; I only ever watch them at home anyways.

Question - how much to the SDXC cards stick out? Is this something where you could stick an SDXC in there and basically forget about it?

If I go this route I would definitely be going with an external USB3 or Thunderbolt drive (Probably USB3 to save some cash.)

You will get a lot more storage, yet still retain the speed. Just put old data on the external and whatever you are working on at the moment on the internal.

That way you don't always need the drive with you, but when you do have it you have a ton of extra storage.
