wait times...

for those wondering why lists take forever to load. I think it has to do with the upload file limit set in the Files section of the Prefs. I upped mine to 10 and I get a lot more throughput.

Another issue is the fact that it could just be taking a while to get an unusually large listing of files from a slow-connected user.

I've had good success so far, and the key has been to connect to as many servers as you can and then do a search.

But browsing individual users' files is a lot of fun! You turn up the most amazing things. :) One dude has every Calvin and Hobbes comic ever published!!!

This Direct Connect really sink... be able to download a file from one ppl only gives baaaddd download speed

For me, the best peer-to-peer system is still mldonkey  Nothing better than that for the mac! Period!

Give it a try ;)

Mine quits on me :( I guess I nee Jag

Who says u need 5gb of files being shared to download anything, thats crap!!! I only have like 5gb left and most of that is for Jaguar (when I get it)

o come on. you don't have 5gb of mp3s you could share? your hard drive is so full that you only have 5gb left and yet not a single thing that is filling up your drive is worth sharing? if you are a leech, admit it but dont give lame excuses as to why you dont want to help other people.

LOL, Well I'm not a big music person so I don't have a ton of mp3s... I do have programs though... also I need Jagaur... Which I don't have... yet <PRAYING: please get as christmas gift... please get as christmas gift...> Well I have files but I don't have any people would want, I meen all I have is a FireWire 80gb HD Filled with old versions of programs and tons of Adobe software that costs a lot of $$$.... well I have gone too far...

Direct connect is kind of a crap shoot. I rarely use it to find a specific file. What i do use it for is to see what other people are sharing. When I find someone with a fast connection, I am inclined to download a lot of what they have and try it out. I use it to try new music, or things I handn't even thought of.

When I am log onto direct connect, I usually just search random hubs and people to find files that seem interesting to myself.

In regards to the people having problems connecting to other users. Set yourself to passive mode in the prefrences. Also, you just need to try and connect to every user. Honestly, you usually connect to about 1 out of 25. It is pretty crappy odds, but considering the number of people and files out there, it is not that bad. Just keep hunting and you will find what you are looking for.

Exuse me but for some of you who are saying "oh 5GB is not that much to share cmon" keep in mind that not all of of have humungous 40+Gig drives. Some of us are still stuck on a ****ty Blue and White G3(upraded to 500Mhz but still slow). Sorry i have a 6 gig HD i just cant have 5gigs of files to share. Hell even if i did i dont need 5gigs of media stuff on my HD thank you.

i have gotten one file list so far, so i know it is not completely broken, but all the others still are listed as 'waiting' although waiting for what i have no idea.

The pc version of dc does not have a long wait time to browse for files. On the other hand getting the file you want does take a while. Requests are put in a queue so you have to wait for an available slot to open up for you to download something.

Dude

This app rules. I shared my music folder (about 2GB) and my games folder (about 4GB).

I get into nice servers. Right now im in 4 hubs sharing a total of about 50 terrabytes. its pretty sweet. Im DLing 3 movies, and 5 songs!

....ah yeah....

I've tried it on PC before... and I was able to get a few audio files... tried some larger files and it was O K at best for me.

I'll stick to Carracho for all my Mac needs : )

---> I admin a Carracho server anyways so i'm biased :D

**hint I run my webpage on the same machine as my server.... hehe

I think everybody here is trying to use DC in the wrong way. It is NOT like kazaa where you sign on and everything majically appears. This is why napster had trouble, it was too central. Direct Connect's method is to have alot of decentrialized servers where you meet up with lots of other users and share things. It is VERY popular on college campuses. Where I am we have 16.5TB's min on the network at all times and transfers are around 1-10MB/s usually, all because it on the local area network. People who don't come from our LAN are not allowed to join into the server. This is why DC is great, it gives a local group of people (about 15000 here) a quick way to throw around stuff.

For you people who are complaining that you can't download off of multiple users at the same time, stop b****ing. You're not supposed to be able to. DC is not a dial-up oriented service.

If you have the right connection and know the right server's, then DC is amazing. If you don't then move on cause this isn't for you.

BEN

So is there any good way to find out if there's a server on your LAN? I'm at college and I'm getting pretty slow connections so far, but if there's a local server it would be much faster. We had an openNap based thing a while ago, but it got shut down. It sure was nice while it lasted though.

WOW!!!

this is really interesting, all of u guys cant get it to work and mine works famously. I now have a p2p that is as good as kazaa in my opinon(w.o the bull**** pc tho..)

works fine here, i wish there were some english hubs to connect to, i dont speak sweedish. I can find some stuff searching, but i dont think that is the best way. This reminds me of how I used to DL stuff from usenet, look to see what is there and DL what sounds interesting. Not quite as reliable, but fair. I like the interface, but a tabbed system a la limewire would reduce the clutter.

My thoughts...

I'm surprised no one mentioned the popup advertisements that it will open on your system.

http://www.neo-modus.com/MacPop.php

That's the URL that popped open in IE a couple times while I was using DC. Don't click that. Really. Don't. Don't encourage adware.

The file sharing limits and such are reasonable, after all, why be a leech when your upstream is doing nothing at all?

But at the same time, I echo the sentiments of an earlier poster: this is still lame in comparison to free Hotline servers of old, and I will continue to run a free one for as long as I can. Requiring uploads, banner clicking, and all that other stuff isn't necessary... the best HL servers came about from users' willingness to contribute on a whim, not as a requisite.

edited because the link didn't have a disclaimer. really, you shouldn't click it.

I've gotten that, but nothing shows up on the page, I use chimera 0.6 Is it bad? or just annoying?
