Direct connection from modem???

I have an imac and use a linksys router to connect to the internet but any time i try to connect the ethernet cable to the imac from the modem i don't get any connection at all. Is there ne way to make this work?

I would think you would need to release the IP on your imac and restart your modem. I see no reason as to why it wouldn't work unless your internet connection using PPPOE.
