The beta DVR is terrible. No fast forward on ANY program I have tried so far, and if the connection drops or hangs, you have to watch your recording from the beginning WITH NO ABILITY TO FAST FORWARD

As soon as our prepaid account balance is used up, we will be switching to Hulu TV + Enhanced DVR. At least Hulu understands what a DVR is for - fast forwarding!

Features are great, just hindered by the interface. The beta iOS app and Apple TV app is extremely buggy. I don't think they'll be able to fix by Spring.

CloudDVR seems to miss a lot of recordings too.

Got Directv Now the 7 hour after they went live. Still holding on the the GOBig promo ($35). I watch a lot of tv and because of that a DVR is very important to me. So in the last year also I have been using PlayStation Vue (the app on the Apple TV). Playstation Vue is full feature with most of what anyone would want. Most of all it has the best DVR. Plan to go full time with Directv Now when the get their act together.

I have been a DTVN customer since day one, and I really like it. I did the pre-pay when it first came out to get the Apple TV even though I already had one, so I gave the extra one to my mother because she was on a Gen. 3 ATV. I love being on the GoBig package for $35 with free HBO for life (as long as I never change my plan or cancel the service.) The picture is way better than cable, which obviously cable boxes STILL cannot broadcast in 1080p (1080i is the highest the TW|Spectrum boxes my grandparents and mother have) which is just utterly ridiculous in 2018. Think how long it will take cable to broadcast in 4k!!! I am beta testing as well, and I agree with everyone that the new guide interface is just not optimized at all.

1. When you try to scroll fast, like others have said, you sometimes lose the "highlighter" of which channel you are on and have to restart the guide...definitely needs to be fixed. The one good thing about the guide is obviously now you can see what is actually playing on each channel. For example, when you go on to ESPN, it now will tell you which teams are playing against each other and give a little description like "The #5 Ohio State Buckeyes (11-2) take on the #8 ranked USC Trojans (11-2) in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic." It gives the summary of tv shows/movies as well, not just sports.

2. I have found it easier that if you want to scroll from say a channel that starts with "B" to "H" it is easier to use the side scroll on the Apple Remote to just skip through C-G channels to get to HBO say. It is WAY easier than trying to scroll through each channel at once.

3. Really, in my opinion, all they have to do with the guide is work on making it as fluid scrolling as the guide on the non-beta DTVN App. Everything else with the guide is pretty much okay with me, except they really need to implement a way to "go back" to the channel you were watching previously. I mean, just put a icon on the guide that allows a "go back" feature or do something with the remote, like a quick double click of the remote take you back to the previous channel. I am sure these developers/engineers can figure a way to add that.

EDIT: Thinking about it, I guess in a way it does have an icon because when you push "Menu" on the Apple Remote and the "Watch Now" interface comes on, it has nine of the latest channels you have watched, with the most recent ones being front and center and the ones watched the least you have to scroll over more to see. So it is definitely a quicker way than using the guide to scroll to the last channel you were on.

4. I am not having the issues that some of you are having with the DVR. When I record a show, it records it from the start, all the way to the finish. I have not experienced any early recording of the show that was on prior or any cutoffs before the show ends. That is beta software for you though! I agree with what many of you about the DVR not being ready for primetime yet as it has some big flaws still. When you record a series, it will literally record all the episodes that air (which that part is right) but then it will record any reruns. I am recording "Chain of Command" on NatGeo and when I went into my DVR tonight I had three of every episode which is just eating up my DVR space for zero reason. I put a bug report in about that, and I am sure many others have as well.

I really cannot think of much more as I am super tired, however, I do think AT&T/DTV will be able to get this polished up by LATE SPRING, not any earlier. Guide speed/fluidity and DVR are the major things that need to be fixed, in my not so important opinion. I am definitely staying with DTVN though, as I am saving about $75.00/month by ditching the cable box and home phone from TW|Spectrum and keeping the internet through them because I have no choice as in my condo building it is wired for Spectrum only AND Spectrum is the only internet provider in my city which is ridiculous. I pay Spectrum $70.00/month for 300/25 internet (only service I get from them) and obviously the $35.00/month for DTVN so $105.00 total vs. the $183.00 bill I was paying when I had cable/phone with then TW.

I will gladly take that $78.00/month, $936.00/yearly of savings and invest that in Apple products and what not, haha.

Edit #2: One thing that really has me mad is that in my area I have zero local channels. DTVN said they were rolling out in a lot of new markets this past fall 2017, well I did not get any. I know for a fact my local CBS station is available to stream as I can get it through CBS All Access, however, I am not paying them just to watch my local news which is garbage anyways. CBS All Access does have a tier with less commercials but I believe it is double what the "normal" tier is, which is $5.99 I believe. I am in a pretty big market, because I am in a city right on the New York State Thruway in-between Syracuse and Albany. It makes no sense to me that even Albany and Syracuse do not have local channels last time I checked. How are all you guys with local channels, I am curious how many of you get some, and how many get all. Thanks for any input on that!

Have a good one guys!

I find it really shocking that a TV and ISP company that has been around for decades is not leading the live tv streaming market.

Apparently, from what I have read is that it is more expensive and a bit harder to get the license to stream live local channels in any market, so I guess that is the big reason why the local channels are not rolled out to everyone. There is more to it that is explained in a thread in the Apple TV forum in one of the DirecTV NOW discussions.

They need to get on this though because I will have to go to a friends house to watch the Super Bowl unless it will be streaming on NBC's App, or another Apple TV App. Of course this is the year that my team, the Eagles, make it to the Super Bowl and as of now I am pretty sure I will not be able to watch it at my own damn house!

It seems like a lot of people are on grandfathered plans back when these companies first started. I’m on a grandfathered Sling TV plan and I would love to try DTV Now because it has more local channels than just NBC like Sling does where I live, but the value proposition of losing grandfathered pricing means I probably never will.

I have the grandfathered $60 plan for $35. I also have a TabloTV that I was using in the beginning to get my local channels. Now my local channels are on DirecTV NOW, but the Tablo gives me DVR for local TV channels that I can fast forward without restriction, etc. I also use the ability to log into individual channel apps to view everything else I would use a DVR for. Those come with commercials, but usually shorter breaks than when originally broadcast. For me, I don't really care if they ever implement DVR service. If they charge extra for it, I won't subscribe. What I'm doing now works fine. Using the Tablo and apps also let's me use more than 2 TV's at once because it's rare I actually need to stream 2 DTVNOW shows at once.

Here is a link to sign up for a free 7 day trial. It is worth a shot, just make sure you cancel before that last day or it will bill you for whatever package you pick. Give it a try and let us know what you think!

The only local channel not available in the DMV is CBS. Which is kind of odd since this is a top 10 major market. When I asked about it DirecTV NOW claims they are working on adding it and it should be soon. That was way back at the beginning of December when I signed up for the the ATV 4K deal.

I am on the same plan ("GoBig") which I got when I signed up when DirecTV NOW launched and also got the free Apple TV, which I gave to my mother because I already had Apple TV 4th Gens for my two TV's.

I never heard anything about them charging extra for the DVR and doubt they will, however, it would not effect us because we are locked into that price.

Do you get any local channels on DirecTV NOW, or are you in my situation where you get zero local channels?

I have of course already used the service and there are plenty of free trial offers on the internet, but that doesn’t change the fact that my grandfathered Sling plan will always be significantly cheaper - so switching is more or less out of the question.

I was just trying to be nice, because you did not indicate that you had tried the service in your post. Obviously for you, if you are on Sling on a locked in price that is no longer available for new customers, and it is cheaper you have zero reason to switch. Just like I am on the $60.00 for $35.00 plan with free HBO...why would I switch to anything else...plus I am pretty happy with DirecTV NOW. Once they add local channels, I'll be set!

I get all of my local channels now except PBS, but didn't get any in the beginning.

Glad to hear that they haven't said anything about charging for DVR service, but I wouldn't take it for granted that we are locked into getting it for free. We may be locked into the price for our programming package, but if they offered the DVR service as an add-on, we'd have to add it on at whatever price they charge. If they make it part of the package, then we'd get it included. My guess is that they'll give everyone a small number of hours of space for free but then charge if you want more.

I’m in the beta as well. Today I received a bunch of pop ups on the Apple TV saying “oops something went wrong, try again later” but the app continued to work as advertised. Also, once in a while my screen will go black, but the audio continues.

Have you experienced any of that?

My screen doesn't go "black" but the picture will freeze while the audio continues. It seems to be a buffering issue. Sometime the picture will start up again automatically, sometimes I have to flip the channel to get it to rebuffer.

If the local channel is owned by the network it should be on there. I’m in the Philly area and have all local channels including CBS. If your local network station is not owned by the network, that’s where things get problematic for DTVN.

I’ve tried direct tv, playstation vue, sling, hulu..but youtube tv got the best user interface.

Am with DTVN from day 1 and am also a Beta tester. Since I have the GoBig + HBO for $35 I have a great deal, so there is no way I will ditch them for something else. The regular DTVN app works well for us. I also have OTA, but reception is not that great, so we depend mostly on DTVN. One feature I would really like to see is the ability to reorder the channels so you find your favorite channels easier. Scrolling through the regular guide or your favorite channels is still a very slow process. The Apple remote is not helpful in that way either.

As for the Beta, I think it is great to have the DVR function, but it is still very buggy. Recordings are either not recorded, or too short. When you want to delete, you have to try it at least 5 times in before it is removed from your library. Playback is most of the times smooth, but lately I have seen skips of about 5 seconds. Fast forward is nonexistent because of buffering, so when available, I use the 15 second forward option to skip forward, mostly for the commercials.

Hopefully they keep testing a bit longer as spring is around the corner, but the DVR function needs still a good amount of work before releasing it to the public.

I switched to an unlimited AT&T cell phone plan last year. This gave me discounts on a DirecTV Now account. I tried them out and I find their apps so confusing. I've had DirecTV satellite DVRs and they are awesome. Why can't they just make the interface more similar to that? Do they just want people to not like Now so they go back to the satellite service?

Do you use the side scroll on the Apple Remote? It is much faster to get you through the guide if you are hopping more than a few channels.

Tried watching an on demand show in DTVNow the other day. I tried to pause the program for a second and it RESTARTED IT from the beginning. No way to fast-forward or rewind or resume or (apparently) PAUSE. These services have a long way to go.
