When my iPhone XS Max connects with my car's Bluetooth (2015 Subaru Forester), it automatically starts playing the Music app and if I don't want to listen I have to open the phone or the car's audio to pause/stop the music. I've looked and there are no settings I could find in the vehicle or the phone to prevent this. I could prevent this with settings on my Android phone but can't seem to with the iPhone (I'm new to the iPhone but not to iOS). Any suggestions other than disabling automatic Bluetooth connection with the car? I want the connection for phone and for music when I want it. The car head unit dose not support CarPlay.

I think the phone automatically plays if it was playing when it last disconnected. That is, if I'm listening to music and I just turn off the car and leave, it starts playing next time it connects. I don't like it either.

Mine starts automatically on connection even when if it wasn't playing when last connected, i.e. it always starts playing and requires manual stop.

The answer is so obvious that I was embarrassed when it was suggested to me over on Reddit - have the car Media mode in something other than Bluetooth (e.g., radio) when turning off the car. Slap to forehead. Another slap to forehead - have media turned off when turning off the car. In both cases, when the iPhone connected on car start, the Music app did not start up.

actually this has been an issue for a while. I reported this to Apple a few years ago. It didn't matter if I had the in-car unit set to radio or bluetooth or whatever, it still played the music from my phone.

Op: are you sure this is fixed? it might be that the music is playing off your phone and you don't know it as you have your in car system set to radio or whatever. Check your phone the next time you're in your car and see if the music applet in control centre is on "music" and playing a song.

the only way I fixed this was to not have music stored on the device full stop and instead steam my music either iTunes/iCloud music or some sort of streaming service like Apple Music or Spotify.

cheers

I did verify - the Music app was in pause mode and not playing so it does work. This behavior may be car dependent?

I have this problem, but I don't want to have to turn off my yrs bluetooth overtime I get out of the car. I need the cars bluetooth left on so I can receive business phone calls.

I just wish Apple Music app didn't automatically open and play whenever my phone connects to m car. I'd rather have to open up the app myself and choose to play my music.

I ma have to deletes the Apple Music from my phone and use a different app such as Amazon Music.

I believe you should blame your car. It's part of the bluetooth spec that the car can control playback. Apple is just following the spec.

Still wish there was a override.

I found a partial fix, open Music on you r iPhone, click on Edit in the top right of the screen and deselect everything - Playlists, Artists, Albus etc. It seems to work.

I then started to play some of my Amazon Music from my phone through the cars speakers, and now when I get back into the car it auto plays my Amazon Music!!!

I’m gonna try the posted suggestions, since this has been an annoyance for me as well on all of the following cars that I own, or owned :

2005 Acura TL-S
2009 Cadillac Escalade ESV
2010 Cadillac CTS-V
2014 BMW M5
2015 Lexus RX 350 FS - current
2015 Lexus LS 460L
2018 Mercedes E63 AMG - current

I just wish it would play the last thing I had open (Pandora, Spotify, Apple Music that isn’t on my device). I think it does this sometimes if the inadequate iPhone RAM doesn’t “intelligently” close my music app before I get back in the car. It’s super annoying how it always plays the last stupid song that is stored on my device. I never listen to stored music on my device so I guess I should just unload it all, but that’s such a stupid fix. It would be nice if it would just leave my music app open even when I’m not using it. MORE RAM! TRUE MULTITASKING! What ****ing year is this?!
