Can I disable the Caps Lock Key? 2008 iMac desktop running Yosemite. I look at the kyboard when I type and am often looking up to see that I've typed a long line in all caps.

I use a mechanical keyboard.
I just pull out the key cap of any key I don't want to type one.
You should try one, too. It's very convenient, very comfortable to your fingers.
I pryed the cap off, but underneath it there's still the key that goes up and down.

It's mean you have a sticky key, right?
In that case, you must disable that key from the board, or simply cleaning the keyboard may fix.
If yours is a mechanical keyboard, it will be easy to change the key (switch), just some simple desoldering + resolder new switch.

Does System Preferences/Keyboard/Modifier Keys have a Caps Lock option in your version? If so, just set it to "No Action". It's a 'tidier' solution than pulling the key off!

Yeah, don't mangle your keyboard, just disable it in software. Also I might suggest taking some typing lessons in order to not have to stare at your keyboard all of the time... Join the touch-typing master race

Great. Easy peasy. Thanks very much. I didnt know what a "modifier key" was.

Ja vohl, mein herr. Believe it or not, I was once a newspaper editor. I devoted some time to trying to learn touch-typing but gave up on it. It should be a required course in high school.

What app were you typing in when this happened? I know that Word for Windows has a Menu item somewhere to change all highlighted text to lower case (or upper case if you have the reverse situation). Just wondered how you recovered from the inadvertent invocation of caps lock.

Yes, TextEdit has that function, BUT HERE FOR INSTANCE you have to erase and retype.

Even better is to use @Fishrrman's suggestion, but remap the Caps Lock key to be an alternate CMD or CTRL key. I use a lot of CTRL shortcuts and the Caps Lock is so much easier to reach than the CTRL key.

The advice posted in reply 2 was just a joke, I hope.

1. Open keyboard pref pane
2. Click "modifier keys" on lower right
3. Set caps lock key to "no action".
4. Close system preferences.

Done.

It's not a joke from my view.
I use only mechanical keyboards.
Got a sticky key or a dead key? Open the back panel of the keyboard and replace the switch.
The shop will charge 2$ for 1 switch at a tme. Or I can buy 10 switches and do the soldering myself.

Now they are selling keyboards with hot swap switches as well. Just pull out the keycap, plug-out the switch, insert a new switch in and it's done.

Can't do this with a membrane keyboard.

I dont think you understood my original question. It wasnt about a sticky key or a dead key, it was about getting rid of a key.

OP:

Just go to the keyboard pref pane and disable the caps lock key as I mentioned above.
Then it will "do nothing" when pressed. It will be there, but with no function.

Seriously ... you would pry the key off the keyboard?

Perhaps this thread ought to be moved to the "wasteland" category...

As I said before, I followed Fishrrman's advice and disabled the key. I dont know why Nguyen is still going on about soldering.
