Every time I wake my MacBook, the DVD drive makes that ugly groaning noise. Nothing is wrong with the drive itself, the noise is just annoying!

Is there any way I can turn this off?

Take it out and fit an adapter with a 2nd HDD/SSD in it...

Or just take it out. Or just unplug it.

That's not really going to help, is it?
Yes, it should help. Did you try it?

The theory is that if a disk is already in the drive, then the drive does not "hunt" for a disk, since there is already a disk in place. I am pretty sure it will take care of that "coming out of idle" sound.
I might be wrong in your situation, but I usually leave a disk in my old MacBook, and the drive does not seek when coming out of sleep.
The only downside is that the disk is mounted, but I don't see that as a problem.
