iPod Disable iPod disk use?

I have a 2nd gen 10 gig ipod and I want to disable it's disk use. I never ever use it as a Mac hard disk and when it mounts it prevents me from just pulling the firewire out and going. In iTunes preferences there's a check box for "enable disk use" that is checked, but it's greyed out so I can't uncheck it. Any ideas?

Have you set it to Manually Manage Songs? Unfortunately, it won't let you disable disk usage if this is the case.
