I feel like an idiot here, but I can't figure out how to disable the screen saver. I don't need not stinkin' screen saver eating up resources.

In your System Preferences there's a Desktop & Screen Saver pane with a slider bar to adjust the length if time before the screensaver activates. Slide it all the way to the right to Never. Or you can select the Dashboard & Expose pane where you can assign a hot corner to disable or activate the screensaver.
